Volkswagen has unveiled a new generation of the TSI engine at the 37th Vienna Motor Symposium.

Volkswagen has now revealed the details of the new generation of their turbocharged petrol TSI engine line-up at the Vienna Motor Symposium. The so-called AE211 TSI evo is claimed to be more efficient and more powerful than the out going generation by 10%.

The only confirmed engine in the line up is the 1.5-litre engine available with a range of 130hp – 150hp outputs. One of the main features of the new power unit is the turbocharger with variable turbine geometry which Audi uses in their engines. The technology will feature for the first time in a volume-produced spark ignition engine.in addition to that, the new generation engines have been improved with a miller combustion cycle with a high compression ratio, Common-rail injection system with up to 350 bar pressure, a new and improved thermal management system, Cylinder deactivation (ACT) and Atmospheric Plasma Spray (APS) coated cylinder walls.

The Miller combustion cycle is a key innovation in the new EA211 TSI evo. The resulting improvement in thermodynamic efficiency has been systematically implemented through four main development targets - Increase in the geometric compression ratio to improve efficiency in customer-relevant operation, reduction of the final compression temperature through early intake valve closing and resulting expansion cooling in the intake stroke, optimisation of the charge motion in the interests of rapid flame propagation to reduce knock tendencies at high specific loads and increase in charge density through efficient exhaust gas turbocharging.

The 1.5 litres will also be the replacement for the current 1.4 litre TSI engine. Volkswagen will commence production of the new engine later this year, and will go on sale as well. But it still unconfirmed which vehicle will get the engine first.

In India, the 1.4-litre TSI engine features in the Volkswagen Jetta and the Skoda Octavia. Eventually, the engine will be updated to the newer generation, but it is still confirmed when.
