Tata Tiago EV

autoX Awards 2023: The Tiago EV we tested was the short-range version. Now, let me just say that this version of the Tiago EV is quite simply a city car. In fact, it can’t even manage short trips on the highway. Why? Well, the simple answer is ‘range anxiety’. Let me explain. I drove a fully charged Tiago EV to the iCAT testing facility – which was the testing ground for our Best of 2023 awards – and after the tests were done, the car had covered a total distance of just over 100km, while the remaining charge displayed was a mere 8 per cent. To be honest, that’s enough to drive someone with range anxiety mad, but I must also add that the particular driving cycle in question was one where efficiency was the least of our concerns. In the real world, this number can easily be stretched to 150km or so.

Now, let’s talk about what’s good about the Tiago EV, starting with its exceptional ride quality. Despite being an electric car, which means that it’s a bit heavy for its size, the Tiago EV has incredible ride quality. Its ability to absorb all kinds of bumps and uneven surfaces, without getting unsettled, ensures a predictable and comfortable journey. It’s something that will please a sedate driver, and an enthusiast as well.
In fact, Tata has managed to endow the Tiago with decent handling abilities too. While it may not be the sharpest car around, considering its weight and power output, it, nevertheless, offers a delightful driving experience, making ordinary commutes a little more exciting than they usually are.

And, it’s quite evident in its lap times – it scored better than five other cars, including two of its EV rivals from the same segment and the more powerful Lexus LX. Of course, a lot of cars were faster than the Tiago EV, but it was unequivocally the fastest in its segment.
