autoX Awards 2023: The notion of electric motorcycles often triggers a sense of curiosity, leaving one to wonder what exactly would it be like. After all, EVs don’t need a transmission, which is essentially one of the fundamental aspects that contribute to the thrill of riding a motorcycle. So, in that sense, the Ultraviolette F77 truly had its work cut out to impress us.

And impress us it did. In fact, I would go as far as to claim that it’s truly a game changer. You see, while the F77 might not feature a traditional motorcycle gearbox, it excels in other areas. Its striking aesthetics, for one, remind you of a much more powerful and expensive motorcycle. Its design exudes an air of streamlined efficiency and looks sharp enough to cut cleanly through the air, and Ultraviolette’s assurance regarding the functionality of the design further adds an extra layer of allure.

Now, the Ultraviolette F77 is a heavy motorcycle, given that it’s electric, but once you swing a leg over and roll it out of the parking lot, all its weight magically disappears like a dove into a hat at the behest of a magician. While I have no idea how it was achieved, I am still in awe of the seamless execution of this feat. Just exercise some caution while rolling the motorcycle around a parking lot, and you are good. As for the handling, it significantly outperforms lighter motorcycles, for it effortlessly carves through corners, making you feel that it’s gliding on rails.

While its performance is adequate, considering its price, we would have loved a bit more poke from the electric motor. Plus, the regen settings are also quite mild, meaning that you don’t really experience the ‘engine-braking’ effect like you do on traditional motorcycles. Nevertheless, as Ultraviolette’s first motorcycle, the F77 gives you a vivid glimpse into the future of electric motorcycles, where the notion of ‘fun’ remains an integral part of the experience.

As for its lap time, it wasn’t really the quickest motorcycle on the list, given the fierce competition it faced from a selection of quite powerful motorcycles this year, relegating the F77 a few notches below where it actually stands in the real world.
