BMW 5 Series

autoX Awards 2024: BMW made quite an impact with the launch of the new 5 Series, particularly with the pricing. On paper, it’s fantastic value for your money, offering more space than ever, as it is the largest 5 Series to have hit the Indian market. This is thanks to the fact that BMW launched the long wheelbase version of the new generation 5 Series in India, making India the second country in the world after China to receive this variant. To give you an idea of just how much of a difference this makes, the new 5 Series, at least at first glance, looks almost as big – if not bigger – than an older generation 7 Series.

After driving it thoroughly in Delhi earlier this year and later pushing it to its limits on the racetrack, I can confidently say that the new generation 5 Series marks a shift in BMW’s approach. Arguably, it places as much – if not more – importance on rear seat comfort, which comes at a slight compromise in terms of driving. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a properly quick car in terms of pace; it’s just that long-time BMW purists may not find it as engaging to drive.

The average driver, however, will find the fancy new interior with top-notch materials and attention to detail incredibly impressive. The 7 Series-inspired cabin is a welcome addition, and the increased dimension of the car translates into what feels like acres of space inside. The only point of contention, perhaps, is the design. The increased size seems to have thrown off the proportions, and the 18-inch wheels appear disproportionately small, affecting its scores in the design category and, in turn, the all-important X-Factor. But in every other aspect, it is pretty much close to perfection.
