autoX Awards 2024: Whether we like it or not, the future is heading towards electrification. There is no bigger proof of this than the introduction of a vanity scooter by BMW that costs over ₹15 lakh - say hello to the CE 04!

Here’s what makes it even more intriguing. It is powered by an electric motor sourced from the X3 xDrive30e plug-in hybrid, generating 42bhp and 62Nm of torque. Unlike most scooters, BMW has positioned the motor directly onto the chassis, ensuring a more stable and lighter ride feel. Power is delivered to the rear wheel via a toothed belt drive. Despite its substantial weight of over 226kg, the CE 04 remains manageable. Its wheelbase is only 50mm shorter than that of the R18 – it has the longest wheelbase of any production motorcycle – which contributes to its impressive road stability.

While its top speed of 120km/h may not be impressive on the track, its acceleration is – 0 to 50 km/h in a mere 2.6 seconds. It’s no wonder that this is the only scooter to score some points in lap times. BMW has equipped the CE 04 with four riding modes and if you’re after peak excitement, Dynamic mode is where the thrill really comes alive, delivering punchy acceleration and an engaging ride.

The large 10.2-inch TFT display, with a familiar BMW Motorrad layout, is easy to use and looks cool. It is complemented by a convenient rotary dial control on the left switch pod and a mode selector button on the right.

The CE 04 is not your average scooter focusing on comfort and convenience. And let’s not forget the price tag, which is astonishingly closer to what you’d pay for a superbike. That said, the CE 04 undeniably stands out with its futuristic, eye-catching design, but, then, catching a glimpse of it can be challenging, given its neck-snapping acceleration.
