autoX Awards 2024: Mercedes-Benz clearly knows how to make an impact. Alongside the bold GLC 43, which impressed us a lot, we also had the elegant yet understated EQA. As the entry-level model in Mercedes’ acclaimed ‘EQ’ series of electric vehicles, the EQA serves as the electric counterpart to the GLA in their SUV line-up.

Equipped with a comprehensive list of features, the EQA stands out as a tech-savvy electric SUV, which also delivers solid performance when needed. The driving experience is impressively refined, with excellent NVH (noise, vibration, and harshness) levels. Notably, the EQA has a claimed range of 560km per the WLTP cycle, alleviating any concerns about range anxiety. Powered by a 188bhp motor that sends power to the front wheels and makes 385Nm of torque, the EQA can accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in 8.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 160 km/h. While these figures may not make it the fastest in its class, they are more than adequate for a city-focused EV, which is precisely where the EQA is.

Where the EQA left us wanting, however, was in practicality. It’s not the most spacious option in the segment for rear-seat passengers, and its boot space is somewhat limited. Additionally, the design may come across as a bit understated, especially for long-time SUV enthusiasts who prefer a bold, more rugged look.

That said, the EQA makes for the lost ground with a high-quality interior and an extensive feature list, including an impressive audio system, augmented reality navigation, and a high-definition Head-Up Display (HUD).

Overall, the EQA makes a strong case for anyone considering a switch to EVs. It’s a versatile, well-rounded electric SUV rather than a niche performer focused on just one area, which makes it an appealing choice. And, of course, the Mercedes-Benz badge only adds to its value and enhances its appeal.
