The ‘born electric’ Mahindra BE6 made quite a splash when it debuted last year, with its rather futuristic design, impressive range, and relatively competitive pricing. I say ‘competitive’ because you see quite a few of them on the road. We’ve already spent quite some time with the BE6 in the real world, so for our annual track day, the focus was singular – performance. Because, well, track day! We were all quite keen to see what this electric SUV could do when pushed to its limits.

On the track, the BE6 did really well as long as it remained in a straight line – the power delivery was smooth and relentless. That said, the moment you turned the wheel, the electronics immediately stepped in, cutting off power and making things rather frustrating, as it meant no sideways fun at all. That aside, the SUV felt composed around corners and did well to hide its size and weight while carrying speed. The steering response was precise, and body roll was contained.

The BE6’s design is one of its unique features – be it on the inside or out. The coupe-SUV silhouette design is eye-catching and the cabin too has a spacecraft-themed design. That said, the interior design isn’t exactly intuitive and the plastic bits feel cheap in certain places. The rear-seat space is a bit constricted, with limited headroom. You sit in a knees-up position, and the squab isn’t very supportive either. On the upside, it has quite a long feature list.

The BE6 has a claimed range of 535km for the 59kWh battery pack and 682km for the 79kWh version. During the track session, it was driven extensively and still had enough juice left to go back to the dealership without a top-up. So, if you are looking for a modern ‘born electric’ EV that looks like it’s from the future, the Mahindra BE6 fits the bill perfectly.
