In terms of driving, the VinFast VF 6 fares much better. Powered by a 59.6kWh battery, it’s offered solely in a front-wheel-drive configuration, producing 201bhp and 310Nm of torque.

That India is one of the most challenging automotive markets in the world is not a secret, yet that hasn’t stopped new brands from trying to crack it. The reason is simple – not only is India among the largest car markets globally, but the potential for growth here in the short to medium term is enormous. It’s no surprise, then, that Vietnam’s Vin Group is making a serious attempt to claim a share of the Indian market through its automotive arm – VinFast.
Although relatively new to the automobile industry, VinFast has been recruiting global talent to ensure its products are good enough to appeal to customers worldwide. Its first offering for India is the VF 6 EV, which we drove in Vietnam and again for our annual track test.

While VinFast markets the VF 6 as an SUV, we’d place it somewhere between a hatchback and a crossover – a fact reflected in its mixed styling scores. It’s generously equipped, with an impressive list of standard features, but the interior could use some refinement. The surface finishes and build quality, in particular, leave room for improvement.

In terms of driving, the VF 6 fares much better. Powered by a 59.6kWh battery, it’s offered solely in a front-wheel-drive configuration, producing 201bhp and 310Nm of torque. That said, its 2,028kg kerb weight makes it rather heavy for a car measuring just 4.24 metres in length. On the track, however, the VF 6 quickly proved that its suspension and overall driving dynamics have been tuned with care. You can push it through corners confidently and use the torque to pull it out with ease, even if you do feel its two-tonne mass shifting around.

Overall, the VF 6 is a competent, well-rounded product that could benefit from a few design tweaks to make it look more SUV-like and some improvements in terms of quality.
