Kimi Antonelli secured a maiden Formula 1 victory at the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. The Mercedes driver converted pole position into a win by managing the race with composure from the front. This result ensured a one-two finish for the team as Antonelli brought the W17 across the line. At 19 years of age, he becomes the second-youngest winner in the history of the championship and ends a 20-year wait for an Italian Grand Prix victor. The Silver Arrows’ party was completed by George Russell, who secured P2 to cement a perfect weekend for the Brackley-based squad.

Russell stayed within striking distance during the middle phase of the race, keeping the pressure high on his younger team-mate, but Antonelli never left the door open. Towards the end, Russell had to pivot to defensive duties to hold off the charging pack through Shanghai’s technical final sector, but his podium finish ensures he maintains a slim lead at the top of the 2026 Drivers' Championship.

The headlines weren't just about the winners, as Lewis Hamilton sent the Tifosi into a frenzy by claiming his first podium for Ferrari. Starting from P5, the seven-time champion utilised a clever alternative strategy from the Scuderia, extending his stint to gain a tyre advantage for the final sprint.

Charles Leclerc maintained pressure on his teammate throughout the Grand Prix, leading to several side-by-side moments between the two Ferraris. Leclerc eventually crossed the line in fourth place after a sustained battle for the final podium spot. Just behind the Maranello pair, Ollie Bearman secured fifth for Haas despite making evasive manoeuvres on the opening lap to avoid Isack Hadjar’s spinning Red Bull at Turn 13.

Pierre Gasly continued a run of form for Alpine by finishing sixth, marking his second consecutive points finish. He was followed by Liam Lawson in the Racing Bulls and Hadjar in the Red Bull, who recovered to take seventh and eighth, respectively. Carlos Sainz brought the Williams home in ninth, while Franco Colapinto claimed the final point in tenth for Alpine.

Nico Hulkenberg finished 11th for Audi, narrowly missing out on points, while Arvid Lindblad ended his race in 12th. The Cadillac duo of Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez were among the final classified finishers. Perez’s race was compromised at Turn 3 on the first lap following contact with his teammate, while Ocon split the two Cadillacs in 14th after serving a time penalty.

The race saw Max Verstappen retire due to a mechanical failure on his Red Bull. Aston Martin endured a double retirement as both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll failed to finish, with Stroll’s car triggering the only Safety Car period.

Technical issues impacted the grid before the lights went out, with McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri failing to start. Similarly, Gabriel Bortoleto and Alex Albon were unable to take the start for Audi and Williams respectively. These retirements and non-starts significantly altered the points landscape for the constructors' championship heading into the next round.
