F1 has confirmed a major calendar change for the 2027 season, with the Portuguese Grand Prix set to replace the Dutch Grand Prix after Zandvoort’s exit in 2026. The decision marks the end of Zandvoort’s recent spell on the F1 calendar, which began with its return in 2021 and will conclude after the August 2026 race. From 2027, F1 will race at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimao under a new two-year agreement that runs through the 2028 season. For fans, this move brings back a circuit that delivered memorable races during a disrupted period in the sport. For F1, it reflects a continued focus on rotating venues, managing logistics, and balancing fan demand across regions while maintaining its target of a 24-race championship each season.

The Algarve circuit last hosted F1 in 2020 and 2021, when the championship was reshaped due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Portimao stepped in as a replacement venue after several races were cancelled, helping keep the season on track. Lewis Hamilton won both Portuguese Grands Prix held at the circuit during that period. Attendance was limited due to health rules, but the races still drew attention from fans and teams. The 4.6km layout, with its elevation changes and flowing corner sequence, placed emphasis on car balance and tyre control, which drivers frequently highlighted during race weekends.
Portugal’s link with F1 stretches back well before Portimao. The country hosted the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril from 1984 to 1996, making it a regular stop on the calendar for over a decade. Earlier championship races also took place between 1958 and 1960, including events in Porto and at Monsanto Park near Lisbon.
Zandvoort’s departure will come after six consecutive Grands Prix since its return. The circuit became known for its banking and drew strong crowds from across the Netherlands. However, local authorities confirmed that infrastructure costs and other issues influenced the decision not to extend the contract beyond 2026.

Portuguese officials have backed F1’s return to Portimao. Prime Minister Luis Montenegro and Minister of Economy Manuel Castro Almeida supported the deal, linking it to regional plans for the Algarve. Circuit upgrades are planned to meet FIA requirements and increase capacity. Portimao will take over a mid-season slot, as F1 continues discussions over future venues in Europe and other regions.
