The Indian motorsport community is grappling with a major loss, as veteran rally driver and JK Tyre Motorsport’s Head of Operations, Hari Singh, is feared dead following a speedboat accident in the Maldives on March 19. The 59-year-old was among seven people onboard a speedboat that capsized near Felidhoo in the Vaavu Atoll. While several occupants were rescued, Singh remains missing along with Commander Mahesh Ramachandran, an Arjuna Awardee in yachting and a former naval officer. The boat was owned by Raymond Group Chairman Gautam Singhania, who was also onboard at the time of the incident. Singhania was rescued and later returned to India for medical recovery. Search operations for the missing passengers are ongoing in the surrounding reef areas.

Singh’s family has announced that the Antim Ardaas (prayer meet) will be held on March 30, 2026, in Chandigarh. The gathering is expected to be attended by members of the motorsport fraternity, as well as friends and family.

Hari Singh, often referred to as the ‘Flying Sikh’ of Indian rallying, was one of the sport’s most influential figures. A five-time Indian National Rally Championship (INRC) winner, he dominated the domestic rally scene through the late 1990s and early 2000s, setting benchmarks for consistency and performance.

At a time when rallying was still finding its footing in India, Singh’s achievements played a key role in bringing the sport into the mainstream. His success not only elevated the discipline but also inspired a generation of drivers to take up rallying professionally.

Even after stepping away from full-time competition, Singh remained closely involved in motorsport. In his role at JK Tyre Motorsport, he worked extensively with young drivers, contributing to talent development and maintaining a strong presence in the paddock.

If confirmed, his passing would mark the end of a defining chapter in Indian motorsport: one shaped by performance, mentorship, and a long-standing commitment to the sport’s growth.

Further details are awaited as authorities continue their search and investigation.
