Le Mans 24 Hours: BMW Tops First Qualifying Session; Toyota Brings out Red Flag

The qualifying session for the 24 Hours of Le Mans delivered a surprising twist as BMW emerged as the frontrunner for pole position in the Hypercar class. Dries Vanthoor, driving the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8, set a blistering lap time in the final minutes, narrowly surpassing the Cadillac entry that had dominated most of the session. The final minutes were marked by drama when a Toyota driver caused a red flag, disqualifying Toyota's fastest laps. This unexpected incident significantly altered the Hyperpole contenders. With Toyota out of the top qualifying session, the battle for pole position now includes BMW, Cadillac, Ferrari, and Alpine, setting the stage for a more diverse competition at the front of the grid on race day.

Le Mans 2024: LMP2 Class

In the LMP2 class, reserve driver Malthe Jakobsen, piloting the Cool Racing Oreca, seized pole position. Jakobsen's electrifying lap time left established teams trailing by a full three-tenths of a second. Adding to the shakeup, four of the top qualifiers were not fully professional outfits, highlighting the depth of talent beyond the top teams.

Le Mans 2024: LMGT3 Class

The inaugural LMGT3 class also delivered high drama. Defying expectations, Ben Barker, driving a Ford Mustang GT3, stormed to the top spot, narrowly edging out a McLaren. In a remarkable display of diversity, the top seven qualifiers came from seven different car manufacturers. Aston Martin demonstrated its prowess by placing two cars in the Hyperpole round, while Lexus and BMW found themselves scrambling to keep up.
