Liberty Media has received unconditional approval from the European Commission for its acquisition of Dorna Sports, the commercial rights holder for MotoGP. This clearance, following an in-depth investigation into potential competition concerns in the sports broadcasting market, means the deal is set to close. Liberty Media, which already owns F1, will acquire 84% of Dorna, with the remaining 16% staying with MotoGP's existing management, as regulators found no harm to competition within the European Economic Area.
With the acquisition now confirmed, Liberty Media intends to expand the sport's global footprint, focusing on key markets like the United States, to increase television viewership and attract major sponsors. Leveraging its experience from Formula 1, the new ownership aims to boost MotoGP's visibility and profitability, emulating the successful growth trajectory F1 has experienced under it's guidance.

We believe the sport and brand have significant growth potential, which we will look to realize through deepening the connection with the core fan base and expanding to a wider global audience.'
Carmelo Ezpeleta, CEO of MotoGP rights holder Dorna Sports, said: 'We are very happy that the European Commission has approved the transaction. This is an important milestone confirming the even brighter future that lies ahead for MotoGP. MotoGP is one of the most thrilling sports on Earth, and we look forward to accelerating the sport’s growth and expanding its reach to even more fans around the world. Liberty is the best possible partner for our sport and the entire MotoGP community, and we are excited to create even greater value for our fans, commercial partners and everyone competing.'
MotoGP fans can look forward to a revamped presentation of the sport, potentially including docuseries and films, drawing inspiration from Formula 1's "Drive to Survive" and forthcoming cinematic projects. Liberty Media's history with F1 suggests an emphasis on engaging storytelling to captivate a wider audience.
