There are numerous tempting options available in the market now, many of which are relatively affordable. However, if you are looking for your first middleweight twin, you need to give the matter some extra thought. After all, it’s not a decision to rush – get it wrong, and your dream of owning a cool machine can quickly turn sour. </p>
<p>

    Two motorcycles sit squarely in this space, and interestingly, both machines are shaped by fundamentally different approaches to the art of motorcycling. In one corner, we have the fresh face of the Aprilia Tuono 457, the road-biased sibling of the RS 457. Not only is it fast, but it’s also tech-laden. In the other corner, we have the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 – a long-established player in the segment. It might not offer the same amount of technology, but it is much lighter on the pocket and packs an extremely competent engine. So, the question is – which way should you lean: the tech-bro or the bare-knuckle boxer?

<p>While their engine displacements differ clearly, the power outputs of both machines are nearly identical. Yes, the Continental GT produces significantly more torque, but it is also much heavier (more on that later). On the move, both machines offer plenty of grunt and can get off the line with a similar sense of urgency. Also, both are almost equally fun to ride.</p>

<p>That said, the Tuono 457 is surprisingly more tractable of the two, meaning fewer gear shifts in city riding. The lighter clutch of the Tuono 457 further reinforces this advantage, reducing fatigue in start-stop traffic and making daily commuting more comfortable.

While I definitely like the Continental GT’s exhaust note, my heart beats a little faster when I hear the raw and guttural roar of the Tuono 457’s.

<p>Larger-capacity engines tend to produce more heat, which can be especially problematic in traffic. Having experienced the 650cc parallel-twin in various RE motorcycles, I must say that heat management isn’t exactly its strong suit. And given the unforgiving nature of Indian summers, it’s something to be wary of.</p>

<p>Initially, I was of the impression that the Tuono would win this battle, but that’s not exactly the case. Its smaller displacement liquid-cooled engine should have fared better than the Continental GT’s air- and oil-cooled engine. </p>
<p>

    However, that did not happen. The Tuono, too, gets a bit too hot when you are stuck in traffic for long durations. So, there is no real winner here. That said, the Continental GT’s design places the rider’s leg closer to the engine, making incidental contact with it more likely.

</h2>
<p>Weight can be a real point of concern, especially for those riding a bigger bike for the first time. After all, the last thing you want is a bike that’s too heavy for you to handle. At 214kgs, the Continental GT is undeniably hefty, and you can feel all that weight. The Tuono 457, on the other hand, weighs much less – 175kgs to be precise. Consequently, it feels noticeably easier to manoeuvre, especially at parking speeds and in tight spaces.

    Riding Position, Seat Height &amp; Comfort Differences
</h2>
<p>In terms of ergonomics, the Tuono 457 offers a more relaxed riding position than the RS 457. The tube-type handlebars sit higher and are wider, resulting in a more upright posture.</p>

With a seat height of 800mm – 20mm lower than that of the Continental GT – the Tuono should, in theory, feel more accessible. Still, in practice, I found it more difficult to mount and dismount because of the higher pillion seat.</p>

The Aprilia Tuono 457 is the naked twin of the RS 457 – the motorcycle that shook up India’s entry-level supersport segment with its seductive Italian design, hot-blooded performance, and razor-sharp handling, which explains why it won autoX’s ‘Best of 2024’ award, along with the Indian Motorcycle of the Year (IMOTY) title later that season.</p>

<p>Now, as brilliant as the RS 457 is, it’s also unapologetically sporty and aggressive. That’s why Aprilia decided to bring out an easier-on-the-wrist naked version of it this year – the Tuono 457. With its wide and tall handlebar and noticeably more relaxed rider’s triangle, it’s an easier bike to ride for sure. Mechanically, it’s unchanged – you still get the 457cc parallel-twin engine producing 47bhp and 43.5Nm, meaning it’s every bit as punchy and addictive as its faired sibling. Aprilia has, however, tweaked the final drive ratio with an extra tooth on the rear sprocket for quicker intial acceleration, but the trade-off is that it is about a second slower to reach 100km/h. The missing (and slippery) bodywork also plays a part in slightly compromising the top end. <p>That brings us to its styling, or the lack of it. In this area, the Tuono 457 is a bit of a mixed bag. While the overall stance is muscular and purposeful, the front end lacks the sharp, predatory appeal of the larger Tuonos.</p>

<p>On the track, though, the Tuono absolutely redeems itself. The front end feels planted and composed around corners. <p>Overall, the Tuono 457 is a phenomenal naked machine that nails the essentials – a thrilling engine, a dynamic chassis, and everyday usability. It just misses out on being as stellar as the RS 457. And, lastly, Aprilia’s after-sales service and long-term reliability have recently come under scrutiny. Naturally, that dents its score in the practicality category.

Aprilia Tuono 457 at autoX Awards: Best Bikes of 2025 Ranked

With its wide and tall handlebar and noticeably more relaxed rider’s triangle, the Aprilia Tuono 457 is an easier bike to ride for sure.

One of the newer entrants in the performance scooter segment, the Aprilia SR 175 hp-e is an easy machine to understand. Light, agile, and purpose-built, it has a single mission – to feed your need for speed. And it does that with surprising ease, especially when unleashed on a racetrack, where it truly comes alive. It makes 13bhp and 14.14Nm of torque – enough to cross the triple-digit mark on the digital speedometer. Even at 80–90 km/h, the engine doesn’t feel strained, making the SR 175 a surprisingly capable companion for long-distance riding. The digital instrument cluster offers crisp graphics, a clear layout, and plenty of useful data, making it one of the better ones in this class.</p>

<p>On the track, the SR 175 holds its line beautifully around corners, thanks to its relatively long wheelbase and 14-inch wheels. They give it a reassuring sense of stability, whether you’re blazing through bends or gunning it on the highway. The only downside is that direction changes at low speeds can feel a bit lazy. <p>That said, the SR 175 struggles in terms of practicality. The seat is on the firmer side, and the suspension feels rather stiff, both of which make riding it on pothole-ridden city streets a bit of a challenge. </p><p>The headlight is also very disappointing, with both its throw and intensity leaving much to be desired. <p>Unlike most scooters, the under-seat storage is also quite limited, and there are no utility pockets behind the apron either. And the engine, while spirited, transmits some vibrations through the floorboard. But, then, the SR 175 was never meant to be a sensible scooter with mild manners. It’s a scooter with attitude – raw, spirited, and built for those who value excitement over comfort and convenience. And in that regard, Aprilia has nailed it once again.

<p>Aprilia has showcased the SR GT 400 crossover adventure scooter at EICMA 2025, combining daily commuting convenience with light off-road versatility. Taking inspiration from Aprilia’s rally and sport motorcycles, it features sharp bodywork, a three-element LED headlight, and a five-position adjustable windscreen. The SR GT 400 has been developed to serve both urban and long-distance riders, offering a single package that handles city rides and weekend exploration. It is built around a double-cradle steel frame for improved strength and stability. It runs on 16-inch front and 14-inch rear wheels fitted with Mitas Enduro Trail tyres to ensure grip on different terrains. Suspension duties are handled by a 41mm upside-down front fork and twin gas-charged rear shock absorbers with adjustable preload, both offering 120 mm of travel. The scooter also has 190 mm of ground clearance, helping it handle rough roads. Aprilia RSV4 X-GP Track-Only MotoGP Replica Sold Out in Just Two Weeks

Aprilia RSV4 X-GP, the 238 bhp track-only MotoGP inspired techs, sold out in just 14 days, highlighting strong global demand for high performance superbike.

<p><em>Aprilia has tried&nbsp;to bring in the best of both worlds, sheer riding pleasure of a motorcycle and practicality of a scooter. We find out if the SR 150 manages to live up to the hype.</em></p>

<p>I felt like a little kid anxiously waiting for his Christmas present when I was waiting to ride the most anticipated scooter of this year, the Aprilia SR 150. The iconic Italian two-wheeler company unveiled the scooter at the Auto Expo in February this year, which managed to grab a lot of attention from both the media and potential customers, and unfortunately, we had no choice but to patiently wait for 5 months before we could get our hands on it. Now I know <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/aprilia/">Aprilia</a> will not like the fact that I’ve called the SR 150 a scooter, twice actually, but then what do I call it. Well in a conversation with Managing Director and CEO Piaggio India, Sefano Pelle, he called it a sport-scooter bike, a hybrid or a crossover which has the qualities of both a motorcycle and a scooter. Call it what you want, but Aprilia has got the SR 150’s design spot on. It exuberates the sporty nature of the Italian manufacturer.</p>

<p>Two things that straight away caught our attention were the twin headlamps, neatly housed above the front nose, and the gorgeous all black 14-inch alloy wheels, which is a first for a scooter. The edgy design will certainly attract a lot of suitors, especially the youth. Personally, we think the Aprilia SR 150’s rear makes more of a statement, thanks to the angular tail lamp and the long seat grab rails. The plastic quality of the body panel is fairly up to the mark, but the stickers could have been much better and an Aprilia metal badging would not have really hurt its image. The riding console houses a basic twin pod speedometer and a fuel gauge, which honestly looked jaded and out of place on this scooter. It’s quite evident that Piaggio had to take some cost cutting measures. Unlike its Vespa sibling, the Aprilia gets a more practical flat foot board and the pillion’s foot pegs are neatly tucked into the body rather than being integrated into the board. It also gets a flash pass switch but we couldn’t fathom why there wasn’t a brake lock clamp.</p>

<p>Before we fired up the 154.4cc engine, we wanted to clear the doubt in everyone’s mind that the SR 150&nbsp;is not a Vespa with sporty gear. Apart from sharing the powerplant, there is absolutely nothing in common between the two. The Vespa has a monocoque chassis, while the Aprilia gets the more conventional underbone chassis. It is also roughly 2 kilograms lighter than the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/vespa/">Vespa</a>, owing to&nbsp;the use of plastic panels instead of metal. Though the power output of the two are identical, Aprilia pointed out that the SR 150 has been tweaked to provide a better delivery as they wanted it to be one of the most powerful vehicles in the segment, if the not the most. We’ll get into all that a bit later.</p>

<p>Finally, it was time to take this eye candy out for a spin. As soon as I plonked myself on the seat I realised that its height is quite high for an average Indian and the cushion could have been better as it is slightly hard. We fired up the engine and it had a distinctive note, which actually sounded like a cross between a scooter and bike - it sounds a bit gruff.</p>

<p>Mated to a CVT automatic transmission, the initial response was quite mellow and predictable. Honestly, we were slightly disappointed. But once the SR 150 hit the mid-range in the power band, there was no looking back. The speedometer needle kept climbing up going past 80km/h without a whimper. Usually scooters tend to run out steam, but the SR was in no mood to slow down.</p>

<p>We hit a series of twisties where the SR 150 got into its groove. With 32mm telescopic forks and 120/70 14-inch Vee Rubber tyres from Thailand, the Aprilia was taking turns with full authority and ease. We never felt that it would overshoot the line or second guess its handling capabilities thanks to the grippy tyres. We could flick it in corners and the SR 150 would happily respond and remain stable. All this was made possible because of a suspension set up that's on the stiffer side. Though the bumps on the road could be felt, it didn’t crash into potholes and make the ride quality bone jarring.</p>

<p>Unlike most modern scooters, the Aprilia SR 150 doesn’t come with features like USB charging port and has limited under seat storage capacity, as Aprilia is focused on handling and power, which is not a bad trade off for many young buyers and enthusiasts. With 220mm front disc and 140mm drum, the SR 150's brakes have a good bite. Unfortunately, at idle, one can feel the vibrations on the handle bar, but once on the move, it manages to iron out this issue. All told, the Aprilia brand, its sporty design and its enticing introductory price – Rs 65,000 (ex-showroom Delhi) - will definitely appeal to many.</p>
