    Back in 2023, the Hero-Harley collaboration gave us the X440 – a gritty, single-cylinder roadster that made a strong first impression. It was comfortable, grunty, and, most importantly, proved that the partnership had real substance. That said, it was not without flaws.</p>

<p>Fast forward to today, and we have the Harley-Davidson X440 T. With a price tag of Rs 2.79 lakh (ex-showroom), it sits exactly where the old ‘S’ variant used to. So, is it simply a different letter on the tank, or is the X440 T genuinely a better motorcycle?</p>

<h2>X440 T Design &amp; Styling</h2>

<p>I’ll be honest – the original X440 had an awkward rear design. It looked imposing in the rearview mirror, but once it passed you, the tail section felt tacky and underwhelming. The X440 T addresses this decisively. Drawing inspiration from the iconic XR1200, Harley has completely redesigned the tail section, giving the X440 T a much more cohesive and premium presence.</p><p>

<p>Up front, the changes are subtle but impactful. You get bar-end mirrors as standard, along with new tank graphics. While Harley claims that the tank dimensions have changed, the difference is largely visual, stemming from the new graphics replacing the old embossed logo. The exhaust also gets a new heat shield and end can, eliminating the slightly ‘afterthought’ appearance of the previous version.</p><p>The X440 T gets new shades like Pearl White and Pearl Red, which offer excellent contrast against the blacked-out components. It now looks like a complete, high-end motorcycle rather than a work-in-progress.</p>







<h2>X440 T Ride-by-Wire, Ride Modes &amp; Power Delivery</h2>

<p>The most significant mechanical update is the introduction of a ride-by-wire throttle. And, it actually makes a substantial difference in terms of refinement. The older X440 felt jerky and gruff during low-speed riding, often catching the rider off guard. The new system considerably smoothens these transitions, making the motorcycle easier to manage.</p><p>

<p>The X440 T offers two ride modes – Road (100% power) and Rain (90% power with gentler delivery). Interestingly, Harley has also added switchable rear ABS and traction control. On the other hand, the 440cc single-cylinder engine’s specs haven’t changed, but the way it delivers power has. The mid-range is still the star of the show – between 2,750 and 5,000rpm, the bike feels genuinely lively. It’s punchy and refined, but there is a catch. The low-end grunt is still lacking, and the top-end feels flat. Because the usable power band is decently wide but concentrated in the mid-range, you’ll find yourself working the 6-speed gearbox often to stay in the sweet spot.</p><p>The ride quality, meanwhile, is a tale of two halves. The rear suspension has been excellently retuned, allowing it to remain pliant and comfortable over most surfaces. The front USD forks, however, have been stiffened up for sportier dynamics. On smooth tarmac, they are great. But hit a sharp pothole or a rutted section, and the front end thuds loudly as it bottoms out. While it doesn’t unsettle the bike, it makes it clear that the front-end has little chill when the roads turn ugly.</p>





<h2>X440 T Review Verdict: Is This the Best Version of Harley’s 440 Platform Yet?</h2>

<p>The Harley-Davidson X440 T is undeniably the best execution of this platform. For Rs 2.79 lakh, you get a more premium design, smoother throttle response, and a better electronics package. <p>Hero MotoCorp's Mavrick 440, built on the same platform as the Harley-Davidson X 440, has been launched in our market. Priced between Rs 1.99 lakh and Rs 2.24 lakh (ex-showroom), the Mavrick 440 is the brand's first middleweight bike for the Indian market. While it rivals the Royal Enfield Classic 350, Honda CB350, and the Jawa 350, we compare the Hero Mavrick 440 with its platform sibling, the Harley-Davidson X440, to see what distinguishes the two.</p>

<h2>Hero Mavrick 440 vs Harley-Davidson X 440: Engine</h2>

<p>Powering Hero's new Mavrick 440 is a 440cc single-cylinder air/oil-cooled engine, which is mated to a six-speed gearbox with a slip-and-assist clutch. While both the Hero Mavrick 440 and the Harley-Davidson X 440 use the same powertrain and are equally powerful (27bhp at 6,000rpm), the former produces 36Nm of peak torque at 4,000rpm, which is 2Nm lower than that of the latter (38Nm at 4,000rpm). However, the Mavrick 440 tips the scales at 187kgs (kerb), which is 3.5kgs less than the X 440.</p>

<p>Both bikes feature the same trellis frame; however, they have different suspension setups. The Mavrick 440 uses a 43mm telescopic fork at the front and twin shock absorbers at the rear, while the Harley-Davidson X 440 gets an upside-down fork at the front and a twin shock setup at the rear.</p>

The Mavrick 440 comes with 17-inch wheels (spoked or alloy) wrapped in 110/70 front and 150/60 rear tyres, unlike the X 440's 100/90-18 and 140/70-17 setup. The braking hardware of both motorcycles, however, remains the same – a 320mm disc at the front and a 240mm disc at the rear.</p>

<p>This is where the differences between the two are more pronounced. The Hero Mavrick 440 is a roadster with a muscular design, a robust fuel tank with integrated tank extensions, a round LED headlamp with an H-shaped daytime running light, small-sized indicators, a single-piece seat, and a slim rear end.</p>

<p>In comparison, the Harley-Davidson X 440, built at Hero MotoCorp’s manufacturing facility in Rajasthan, draws styling cues from the American brand's XR 1200. The X 440 has a chunky front end, featuring a circular LED headlamp with a light bar running across the centre, indicators with Harley logos, and a big fuel tank. Other bits include a long, single-piece saddle, and meaty grab rails.</p>

<p>In terms of riding ergonomics, the Hero Mavrick 440 offers an upright riding stance, courtesy of an 803mm seat, neutral-set foot pegs, optimised grab rails, and wide handlebars. The Harley-Davidson X 440, on the other hand, gets mid-set foot pegs, wide and flat handlebars, and an 805mm saddle, all of which allow for a comfortable and sportier riding position.</p>

<p>The Hero Mavrick 440 is available in three variants – base, mid, and top, which are priced at Rs 1.99 lakh, Rs 2.14 lakh, and Rs 2.24 lakh, respectively. The entry-level variant with spoked wheels comes in Arctic White colour, while the mid variant with alloys can be had in two dual-tone colour schemes – Fearless Red and Celestial Blue. Phantom Black and Enigma Black are the available paint schemes for the top variant with diamond-cut alloy wheels.</p>

<p>Hero's top-spec Mavrick 440 is Rs 16,000 more affordable than the <a href="https://www.autox.com/news/bike-news/harley-davidson-x440-denim-vivid-and-s-variants-explained-price-starts-from-rs-229-lakh-in-india-113837/">Harley-Davidson Denim variant</a> (Rs 2.40 lakh). <p><em>The Roadster is now the sportiest Harley-Davidson available today, but just how sporty is it really?</em></p>

<p>The Sportster line from Harley- Davidson is my favourite. It suits my riding style, and I’m also a big fan of the way the entire line-up is designed. The XR 1200, which is no longer available, was perhaps the most fun Harley-Davidson to ride – and so it helped the brand reach out to a whole new range of customers. If you wanted a proper American cruiser, but also enjoyed athletic performance, that was the bike for you. The Sportster line-up is also the preferred choice for custom builders because of its light frame and easily upgradeable engine. With the absence of the XR though, the Sportster range seems to be missing that one bike that can really reach out to a different breed of riders – and that’s why Harley- Davidson has launched the Roadster.</p>

<p>The Roadster is a redesigned Sportster that’s been built for more aggressive riding with better handling and better brakes. But what really makes it stand out as a capable urban sports bike is that it’s got a much higher ground clearance – which gives it a greater lean angle to take on the corners. The bike looks much the same as the Forty Eight, but it certainly looks more like a proper performance bike.</p>

<p>Up front, it gets 43mm inverted forks with improved cartridge dampening – which offers much more stability in the turns. It’s also gotten upgraded adjustable rear shocks that sit higher. The riding position has also been made much more aggressive. Throw in the newly adjusted steering geometry, and it turns the Roadster into a complete performance machine.</p>

<p>I got to ride the Roadster on some great roads in Rajasthan for a couple of days, and I have to say that it now takes pride of place as my favourite Harley-Davidson motorcycle. It still gets the same 1,200cc Evo Sportster engine, which hasn’t seen any major changes in a very long time – but it’s very enjoyable all the same. The engine feels smooth and refined throughout the entire rev range, and throttle response is good. It might not offer the most exciting acceleration, and you might find yourself downshifting a lot when you need more power, but it’s got a crisp torque output that shoots you forward, and the standard 5-speed manual gearbox works well.</p>

<p>The riding dynamics, though, have really improved – and it’s unlike any Sportster that I’ve ridden before. The riding position is a little awkward at first, but you soon fall in love with it. You sit very high and your legs are bent fully – almost as if you were squatting on the bike. There isn’t too much weight on your wrists, but you are leaning forward, and the foot pegs are placed high and stretch out away from the frame. And because you’re seated like you’re on a track-focused machine, you automatically want to lean into every turn that comes your way – and because of the high ground clearance, slim frame, and wide foot pegs, you don’t have to worry about anything scraping the ground. The bike handles like a dream. It does take a little time getting familiar with it, but once you do you may never want to get off because you really do begin to feel as though you own the road.</p>

<p>The Roadster also gets an upgraded braking system in the form of dual front discs that offer a much better stopping rate than on previous Sportster models. The brakes still feel a little squishy and you need to really clamp down on the rear brake, but it’s a great improvement over previous models.</p>

<p>The Roadster is certainly the sportiest Harley-Davidson we’ve seen since the XR, and I really do feel that this bike can draw in more customers who not only want a classic American cruiser but also a proper urban sports bike. And this is exactly why I think Harley-Davidson has launched the Roadster. It offers an alternative to the more conventional&nbsp;cruiser&nbsp;variants, such as the Forty-Eight, and it’s a good attempt to reach outside Harley-Davidson’s classic customer base. And because it looks great and is great fun to ride, it just might work.</p>
