Harley-Davidson is a world-renowned American motorcycle manufacturer revered by biking enthusiasts all over the world for their traditional cruiser motorcycles featuring air-cooled V-Twin engines. This mega brand’s humble origins date back to 1903 when the Harley Davidson Motor Company was established by founders William S. Harley and brothers Arthur and Walter Davidson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When Harley and Davidson produced and sold their first motorcycle in 1903, they were one of many small motorcycle marques springing up across the country. Now though, the Harley-Davidson bike brand is so rooted in American culture that the history of the company intertwines with the history of America itself.
Harley-Davidson bike was officially incorporated in 1907, with William Davidson officially joining forces with his two brothers and Harley. Setting down roots in Milwaukee, Harley-Davidson began hiring employees and by the end of the decade, they were producing bikes using the signature 45-Degree air-cooled V-Twin.
During the next decade, Harley-Davidson continued to expand. The company achieved significant sales figures with the American military sourcing Harley motorcycles during the First World War. Post-war Harley-Davidson developments include the introduction of the Sportster in 1957, the oldest production model in the current Harley-Davidson line-up as well as other signature Harley-Davidson bike models.
Since the turn of the century, Harley-Davidson has retained its image as a classic American icon. However, the brand was then reaching out to other riders with the introduction of more performance-oriented models, like the V-Rod – significant for being the first liquid-cooled production Harley, combining fuel-injection, overhead cams and liquid cooling.
In 2009, Harley-Davidson announced plans to establish an Indian subsidiary and start selling their motorcycles in India through dedicated dealerships. While India had been on Harley-Davidson’s radar for many years, the plans to enter the Indian market were delayed constantly due to high tariffs and emissions regulations. However, after working out a sales strategy which would compensate for the high taxes and tariffs, the American icon finally arrived in the Indian sub-continent as Harley-Davidson India.
Harley-Davidson India commenced operations in August 2009 and appointed its first dealership in July 2010. Initially, for India, 12 new models from 5 different product families, namely the Sportster, Dyna, Softail, Touring and V-Rod were introduced.
In 2011, the company also set up an assembly unit at Bawal, Haryana and began the assembly operations of its Sportster line followed by the assembly of the Dyna line in 2012 and Softail line in 2013. In 2014, Harley-Davidson began manufacturing the Street 750 and Street 500 motorcycles in India at the Bawal plant, their only manufacturing facility outside of the US. As of 2018, the company has 29 dealership facilities across India.
The range of Harley-Davidson bikes in India consists of the Street 750, Street Rod, Iron 883, 1200 Custom, Forty-Eight, Roadster, Street Bob, Low Rider, Fat Bob, Fat Boy, Deluxe, Heritage Classic, Road King, Street Glide Special, Road Glide Special and the CVO Limited which form the company’s 2018 product line-up.
