KTM is set to update its RC 390 bike soon. A test prototype of the next-generation KTM RC 390 has been spotted doing test rounds in Europe. The motorcycle is expected to be revealed in all its glory by late 2024, followed by its launch expected in 2025. The upcoming BMW G 310 RR challenger will get a new chassis, an updated engine, and new design elements taken from the KTM Moto3 racer. Judging by these spy shots, the motorcycle will come with a full fairing, a single-pod headlamp, sleek LED turn indicators, an LED taillight, a muscular fuel tank, rear-view mirrors, a split-style seat set-up, and five-spoke alloy wheels. Height-wise, it’s the RC390 that will demand a lot, as it has the highest seat of the three. The Ninja, on the other hand, will be the easiest for short&nbsp;riders.

When it comes to the wheelbase, the RC 390 is the shortest, while the Ninja is the longest. The RC 390 comes across as the more flickable motorcycle (it is also the lightest), whereas the Ninja feels better suited to touring. The Ninja also has the largest fuel tank, but the Apache falls short in this area, with a relatively small tank.

As far as tyres go, all bikes have 17-inch rims on both ends, with the front tyre being of the same size in all three. At the rear, the KTM and TVS go head-to-head with similarly-sized tyres, but the Ninja falls slightly short, as its rear tyre is one size smaller.

In terms of engine, the KTM and the TVS both have a single-cylinder motor, whereas the Ninja has a higher-revving twin-cylinder layout. The RC 390’s engine makes the most power and torque, and it is also the only motorcycle to come with a bi-directional quick-shifter. However, the changes are wholesale over the older motorcycle, so let’s dive into those.

The design is all-new. Looking at it, you won’t find a single reference to the older motorcycle. The livery has also been updated which is (if you can believe) even racier. KTM’s Moto GP team has also lent its influence as there are two new colour schemes – KTM Factory Racing Blue/Orange.

Additionally, KTM says the motorcycle has become more aerodynamic and ergonomic and the lighting setup is all-LED now. The instrument cluster has been updated and is now the same unit that has been present on the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/ktm/390-duke/">390 Duke</a> for ages now. There are adjustable handlebars, traction control, cornering ABS, and a SuperMoto mode&nbsp;like the Duke. It allows you to power slide the rear tyre, adding to the fun.

The fuel tank is bigger and can now pack in 13.7 litres of fuel. The braking system has also been overhauled. There are 320mm and 230mm front and rear disc brakes (from ByBre) and they too are lighter. The alloy wheels&nbsp;have also lost weight and are 2.7kgs&nbsp;lighter than before.

What’s remained the same for most parts is the engine. The 373cc unit continues to dish out 43bhp, although torque, at 37Nm, has gone up by 1Nm. The engine mapping has undergone a revision to further enhance the riding experience.

With these updates, the KTM RC 390 is sufficiently refreshed to take on its rivals – the Apache RR 310, the upcoming BMW motorcycle based on the <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-bikes/tvs/" target="_blank">TVS</a> motorcycle and the Kawasaki Ninja 300.

The new RC390 is based on a new platform and gets most new cycle parts. KTM has prioritised weight saving and the bike has shed a few kilos off its wheels, braking components and suspension units.

KTM is currently prioritising the current models on sale and not generating a delivery backlog which is a smart move. The chip shortage has created a major delay in the delivery of cars as well as motorcycles, this has caused an uneven hike in price across the market. Thus, it seems to be a wise decision by KTM to delay the launch of the KTM RC390 and not change its price untimely.

The KTM R390 will be launched by the end of March-2022, and given the difficulties in production, expect a steep price tag as well. That being said, KTM India is likely to introduce the 2022 390 Adventure first – mostly by the end of this month. The new 390 Adventure has been spotted at the dealership yards as well.

&nbsp;The new KTM RC390 is likely to see a price marker close to Rs 3 lakh (ex-showroom). It will mainly rival the TVS Apache RR310 BTO and the Kawasaki Ninja 300.

2022 KTM RC390 launch delayed
