We wanted an affordable 400cc, and we got one. We wanted a scrambler, and we got that too. Then we wanted it to be even more rugged, and now, we finally have it.
Say hello to the new Triumph Scrambler 400 XC. Is this the perfect 400cc do-it-all machine, or are we about to start asking for more again? There’s only one way to find out – spend some time with it, getting silly in the rain and mud. And that’s precisely what we did.<h2>Triumph Scrambler 400 XC Design - Does It Look &amp; Feel the Part?</h2>

 
 
 
 


It certainly does. There are quite a few distinctions over the standard 400 X, but to be honest, this is what the 400 X should have been in the first place. You now have three new colour options to choose from – Storm Grey, Vanilla White, and Racing Yellow. I personally like the last one the most and requested it for our test. Unfortunately, Triumph could only spare one in Storm Grey, which, to be fair, grew on me more than I expected.

The added bits include a raised, body-coloured front fender, a new windscreen with body-colour-specific graphics, and, of course, tubeless spoked wheels. However, here’s the curious part – Triumph isn’t offering the spoked wheels as an accessory for the standard 400 X. In fact, fitting them yourself could void the warranty. Why? Simply because Triumph doesn’t want unauthorised individuals tampering with the brake lines or ABS wiring during the installation process.

In terms of hardware upgrades, the list isn’t quite as exciting as the visual tweaks. The engine guard and sump guard are now standard, and the Scrambler 400 XC also gets adjustable brake levers. Ergonomically, the seat height remains unchanged, but the bike does gain 5 kilograms. According to Triumph, that’s due to the added weight of the spoked wheels and the standard components.

 The only dimensional difference here is the added 20mm in overall height, thanks to the windscreen. The question, however, is – is there a difference in the riding experience?

 
 
 
 


<h2>Triumph Scrambler 400 XC Engine - Similar Performance</h2>

What remains entirely unchanged is the engine. So, if you’re expecting a radically different experience from the 400 X, you’re in for a disappointment. The XC uses the exact same 398cc liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, producing an identical 39.5bhp and 37.5Nm of torque. However, it still remains an absolute peach. Swift off-the-line acceleration, healthy low-end grunt, linear power delivery and smooth throttle response. The Scrambler 400 has never been the best in the segment but one round on the 400 XC reminded me why it still has the best balance of immediate power delivery and relaxed cruising capability.

The real story, however, lies in the running gear. The most significant upgrade is the switch to tubeless cross-spoke wheels – a welcome addition for anyone serious about off-roading. They’re more durable and offer slightly better bump absorption than the cast alloys on the standard X.

Out on the road, the XC feels remarkably familiar. That said, some riders might notice a slightly heavier and lazier steering feel at higher speeds. At lower speeds, though, maneuverability and agility remain spot on.

Yes, it’s 5kg heavier, but that extra weight isn’t something you really feel whether you’re on the move or at a standstill. The suspension and brakes, however, are carried over unchanged from the 400 X. And truth be told, the brakes feel like a missed opportunity – this was the perfect chance to upgrade to sintered pads. It would have helped in performance and longetitivity, both a complaint from existing Scrambler 400 X owners.

If you liked what the Triumph 400cc platform offered from the start – be it aesthetics, performance, or handling – the 400 XC will feel like a welcome evolution. It’s not a different beast; it’s simply better dressed. With more rugged aesthetics and crucial off-road upgrades, like the aluminium sump guard, now standard, the XC caters to riders who want the proven platform with added durability right off the showroom floor. At ₹2.93 lakh (ex-showroom), it asks for a little more, but it gives just enough back to justify it.

Triumph has launched the&nbsp;Thruxton 400 in India at an ex-showroom price of Rs 2.74 lakh. The classic cafe racer mixes the signature look of the bigger Thruxton bikes with the easy-to-handle power of the popular 400cc platform.&nbsp;It is available in four colours:&nbsp;Lava Red Gloss,&nbsp;Pearl Metallic White, Metallic Racing Yellow, and Phantom Black.&nbsp;Regardless of the colour chosen, the bike gets eye-catching graphics and&nbsp;contrasting accents on the&nbsp;fuel tank, fairing, and&nbsp;rear seat cowl. In terms of market competition, the Thruxton 400 doesn't have a direct rival in its displacement and price bracket.&nbsp;However, it could serve as a cheaper alternative&nbsp;to modern retro machines, including the Royal Enfield Continental GT 650.<h2>Triumph Thruxton 400: Design and Features</h2>The Thruxton 400 features a half-fairing, circular LED headlamp and a raked windscreen. Its riding posture is sportier and aggressive than the Speed 400, thanks to clip-on&nbsp;handlebars and rear-set footpegs. Some of the key features are a digi-analogue&nbsp;instrument cluster, dual-channel ABS, and&nbsp;traction control.&nbsp;<h2>Triumph Thruxton 400: Engine and Hardware</h2>The bike has a proven 398cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine that is tuned to produce a maximum power output of 41.42bhp at 9,000rpm, which is an increase of around 2bhp over the Speed 400's 39.45bhp. While the torque is the same at 37.5Nm, the rev is higher at 7,500rpm. The difference of 1,000rpm (both power and torque) from the Speed 400 is a result of a new camshaft and revised engine tune. The engine is paired with a six-speed gearbox.&nbsp;As for the hardware,&nbsp;the Thruxton 400 has a lot in common with the Speed 400, but Triumph has made subtle adjustments to fine-tune its dynamics. For instance,&nbsp;the wheelbase has been reduced&nbsp;by 10mm to 1376mm, and the suspension travel has increased by 10mm to 140mm. Triumph has introduced the Thruxton 400 in India, ahead of a planned global launch later this year. The classic cafe racer gets notable mechanical upgrades over the popular Speed 400. 

Triumph Motorcycles will launch the new Thruxton 400 in India on August 6. Ahead of its debut, Triumph teased the bike with an image of a coffee cup featuring motorcycle-shaped latte art. The design hints at the Thruxton 400’s cafe racer roots. The bike was also spotted testing on public roads without camouflage, revealing its production-ready look. The upcoming Triumph Thruxton 400 will be powered by the same 399cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled TR Series engine. This is the same engine used in Triumph’s Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X. The Street Twin &amp; Street Scrambler have been updated with more power and improved refinement. But the question is – have they become better bikes?

It’s been a while since I rode the Street Twin and Street Scrambler – nearly two years to be precise. But I remember them being brilliant bikes. Small, compact, light, powerful and handsome, the Twins from Triumph are remarkable machines. And the fact that the Street Twin line-up has become the best-selling models for the British bike maker, not just in India but also globally, further proves this point.

Fitted with a beautifully crafted 900cc twin engine, the Street Twin and Scrambler performed very well for what they were. While experienced riders could have asked for more character, they were great motorcycles to introduce new riders to the world of affordable and fun premium bikes. The Scrambler has always been my favourite of the two because of its rugged modern-classic scrambler look. The bash-plate, raised front mud-guard, mid-mounted exhaust and a pair of nice knobby tires really give the bike a distinctive personality.

The 2019 versions of the bikes have now been launched in India, and I was given a choice to pick one of the two to ride first, and, obviously, I chose the Street Scrambler.

Why the update? 
It’s simple, really! Triumph received a lot of feedback from current customers, and more power seemed to be the most popular demand. As a result, the new version of the bike has an added 10 horsepower with 500 more revs before the rev limiter kicks in at 7,500rpm. Triumph engineers managed to do this simply by shedding some weight from the engine. They reduced the size of the camshaft, counter balancers and dead shafts.&nbsp;

I know what you’re thinking. Adding 10 more horses isn’t an easy task, and they would’ve at least added high-compression pistons and larger throttle bodies. That’s what I would’ve thought. However, it seems that the boys from Hinkley have a flexible approach to problem-solving, which they seem to have picked up in India – you guessed it, I am talking about jugaad.&nbsp;

Gone is the old engine that left riders wanting more on the open highway. Now, with 65bhp you get that extra kick, which will allow you to reach higher speeds. The torque output of 80Nm is still the same, and it’s also more than enough to offer exciting acceleration. The torque curve, though, has been flattened so that the peak delivery is spread out and remains available through a wider range. A pretty nice adjustment, I think.

But launching a new version of the bike with only jacked up power output would’ve been too boring. So, to make things more interesting, Triumph has also put in some new cartridge KYB front forks and Brembo brakes with dual-channel ABS. And, as a cherry on top, they’ve also added new graphics and a few tweaks to the design. The Scrambler we drove had an accessory package. The stock Scrambler gets higher and wider handlebars, a higher seat and grippy Metzeler tyres. It also gets knee sliders on the fuel tank, a new seat and instrument cluster. The Vance and Hines exhaust and the headlight protection mesh come as accessories.

Is it a new motorcycle? 
Well, in terms of the overall design and specifications, it’s not a new motorcycle. But it certainly rides a lot better now. The new suspension is nice and soft for Indian road conditions, and the bike is super easy to handle. The Scrambler obviously doesn’t carve corners as well as the Street Twin, but it’s still undemanding. You feel very confident on the road, knowing that you have complete control. The ergonomics are great for all riders, making the bike comfortable for long weekend rides in the country.

There are now two new modes – Rain and Road – but the Scrambler also has Off-road mode. This disengages the ABS and the traction control (for ‘slides,’ of course). The Scrambler gets the same suspension and travel as the Twin, but it’s much better suited for off-roading. However, that doesn’t mean that this bike has an aversion to the tarmac. On the contrary, it really performs best in urban areas and backcountry roads.&nbsp;

And even though the Scrambler is great on easy dirt trails, it’s not a proper off-roader. In fact, the Scrambler is more of a faux off-road bike. It wants to be a standard motorcycle, and it offers a much better riding position than the Street Twin. It’s a bike you can have fun with on any road surface. Just don’t get too excited when off-roading, as the ground clearance is really more suited for tarmac, despite the presence of a bash-plate.

Should you buy it? 
If you want to upgrade to a premium motorcycle then, yes. The Street Twin and Street Scrambler are epic machines. However, I just want to point out that the Scrambler is much more fun if what you want is more freedom. But it comes at a cost – an additional `1.5 lakh. The Street Twin starts at `7.5 lakh and the Scrambler at `9 lakh.&nbsp;

Here is a really interesting option though – you could save `5 lakh and just go for the new Interceptor 650 from Royal Enfield. It offers the same riding dynamics as the Street Twin, but it just gets a little less power and is not as fancy. But, if it’s a Scrambler that you want, and you don’t want to hit the rough stuff too often, then the Street Scrambler is the perfect bike for you. However, if you’re interested in more intense off-roading, then the best scrambler in my book is the Scrambler Ducati Desert Sled. No other bike offers you greater riding pleasure. &nbsp;
