<p>Despite the US Government strong-arming companies to manufacture domestically, Ford has built on its Letter of Intent and has entered into an agreement with the Government of Tamil Nadu to invest in the state. The American carmaker plans to invest Rs 3,250 crore for a project involving the production of next-generation engines. The production shall take place at Ford’s Chennai plant, which it still owns today, unlike its Sanand plant that it sold to Tata Motors.  <br><br>Following a Letter of Intent signed back in September 2024, Ford has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government, and it is yet to enter into a definitive agreement. Moreover, it plans to only manufacture powertrains in India, that too solely for the purpose of exporting them to global markets. <p>What you see on the cover of November 2024 of the <em><a href="https://www.autox.com/magazine/" target="_blank">autoX Magazine</a></em> is a glimpse of our annual mega-test. Other than merely whittling this list of 50-odd vehicles down to the top-ten machines launched in the past year, what our annual mega test enables us to do is put our ear to the ground and get a real sense of which direction the winds are blowing in. Well, all signs point to it being a gust from the East!</p>

<p>Spoiler alert – there are two Chinese EVs in our top-five cars of 2024. And the reason for that is very clear – they really are that good, and they really do provide class-leading value. That China is a powerhouse in EVs is not a new phenomenon, but just how much of a powerhouse is worth considering. How about the fact that 70% of the world’s EVs are made in China? Or consider the fact that <a href="https://www.autox.com/opinion/dhruv-behl/of-the-340-registered-ev-makers-in-china-only-one-is-profitable-byd-116457/" target="_blank">there are almost 350 registered EV makers in China. But only one of them is profitable</a> – BYD! And, yes, one of the two EVs in our top-five is a BYD.</p><iframe width="400" height="345" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/QZ3yIvrZnSA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen=""></iframe>

<p><br>In Q4 of 2023, BYD overtook Tesla to become the largest EV manufacturer in the world. And in Q3 of 2024, BYD overtook Tesla in revenue for the first time. After all, BYD is the only truly vertically integrated EV manufacturer in the world today – producing its own batteries, motors, and chips. In fact, its proprietary blade batteries are perhaps the most advanced and safest battery packs around – so much so that even Tesla sources batteries for its Model Y from BYD.</p>

<p>Elon Musk did warn the world that it wouldn’t be the establishment that would pose a threat to his EV supremacy, but the real threat would come from China. That the traditional automakers are floundering is also not a revelation.</p>

<p>VW has spent the past several years developing its own EVs, but they’re simply not on par with the Chinese competition. So, VW is adopting Chinese EV platforms for its next generation of EVs – at least in China to start with. In the meantime, the German giant is planning to close three plants in its home market. Porsche, meanwhile, is talking about giving its new EV platforms ICE powertrains because of how dismal their EV sales have been of late. Across the pond, in the US, Ford is losing money on every EV sold and doesn’t expect to make a profit till 2027. The CEO of Ford, Jim Farley, even admitted to a Xiaomi SU7 being his current daily driver – presumably his way of checking out the competition. You know the world order has changed when the CEO of the car company that invented the assembly line is dailying a car made by a Chinese cell phone manufacturer.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, closer to home, the thaw at our Northern border may mean Chinese EV investment, which has been on ice in India thus far, may be a little closer to getting the green light. Politics aside, if the BYD Seal and MG Windsor are anything to go by, the emergence of the Chinese EV means that Indian car buyers are getting an up close and personal look at what Jim Farley and his colleagues have found – that it’s becoming increasingly difficult to compete with Chinese EVs.</p>

<p>The Ford Mustang GTD&nbsp;has&nbsp;now become the fastest American production car to&nbsp;lap the legendary 20.8km&nbsp;Nordschleife loop, beating the Dodge Viper ACR (7:01:30 minutes) and the&nbsp;Lamborghini Aventador SuperVeloce (6:59.73 minutes). Driven by Multimatic Motorsports driver Dirk Muller, the Mustang GTD set an officially certified 6:57.685 lap time on the famed circuit nicknamed&nbsp;'The Green Hell'. According to Ford, the GTD&nbsp;is the sixth 'standard' production car globally to break the seven-minute barrier.&nbsp;The road-legal&nbsp;Mustang GTD supercar borrows several cues from the GT3 race car such as&nbsp;carbon-ceramic brakes, active aerodynamics (with a Drag Reduction System),&nbsp;semi-active suspension, and a big supercharger.&nbsp;Apart from a carbon fibre body, the GTD that lapped the famed track had&nbsp;motorsports-derived safety gear mandated by the Nurburgring, including&nbsp;a roll cage and a&nbsp;competition seat with a five-point harness.</p>

<p><em><strong>To meet the BS6 norms, Ford gives the Endeavour a brand-new engine and gearbox – in fact, one of the world’s first 10-speed gearboxes. The question is, does the updated Endeavour still maintain the driving appeal of its predecessor?</strong></em></p>

<p>The onset of new emissions regulations can often be a challenge for most automotive companies, especially when it’s such a big leap – as India has just done from BS4 to BS6, entirely skipping BS5 in between. But, on the other hand, it also allows manufacturers to breathe new life into their machines and give them another shot in the market.</p>

<p><strong>Lean muscle</strong></p>

<p>Keeping the new regulations in mind, Ford India has taken the opportunity to upgrade the powertrain of the Endeavour completely. Not that there was anything wrong with the old engines and gearbox mind you – in fact, I loved the 3.2-litre engine – but the new emission&nbsp;norms mean that the Endeavour is now offered with a single engine option. Previously, you could choose between 2.2 and 3.2. The&nbsp;engine being offered now is a brand-new 2.0-litre turbodiesel unit, which produces 168bhp and 420Nm of torque, figures we’ll come back to later. Also, gone are the manual and automatic gearboxes, and now the Endeavour offers only a brand-new 10-speed automatic gearbox – one of the first units in the world with 10 forward gears!</p>

<p><strong>Same old, same old</strong></p>

<p>Visually, however, the Endeavour remains pretty much the same, which is understandable, considering that the facelifted version of the SUV only hit the Indian market about a year ago. The eagle-eyed among you, however, will notice that the Endeavour now features updated headlamps, which are now Bi-LED powered, which enhances visibility. In the cabin too, there are no real changes, however, the equipment count is slightly upgraded. The Endeavour is now equipped with the FordPass connectivity system. Via the FordPass, the user can perform many functions – such as starting the car, locking and unlocking it, and even getting an update on the fuel level – remotely via the FordPass app. Naturally, this adds to the convenience factor of the Endeavour.</p>

<p><strong>Blowing sand</strong></p>

<p>The proof of the new drivetrain, however, is in the driving, and I have to admit that despite the big changes, the Endeavour still offers fantastic driving appeal. Sure, it’s not a hot hatch, but given its XXL size and weight, the Endeavour is a breeze to drive in all kinds of conditions. With its high-up seating and large glasshouse, the excellent visibility makes manoeuvring the car in traffic can easy job. Similarly, it’s well-tuned suspension and excellent ride makes cruising at high speeds a very easy task. And, special mention must be made for the steering feel of the Endeavour. With its natural feedback and weight, it is amongst the best steering setups in a vehicle of this size in India.</p>

<p>And we got to test the abilities of the Endeavour properly too, as Ford India had organized a dedicated dune bashing session in the sand dunes outside Jaisalmer, where the virgin sand – which is deceptively soft – allowed us to explore the outer limits of the Endeavour’s performance. With its super capable four-wheel-drive system in four-low mode, we also got to exploit a new feature in the Endeavour’s gearbox – the Selectshift system, where you can lock the number of gears that the gearbox can use. We locked it in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears, which meant that response off-road was instant, and we never once got us stuck in the sand. And, lastly, special mention must go to Ford’s chassis engineers, who have set up the Endeavour so well that taking a near 2.5-ton SUV in ultra-soft sand never posed a problem at all.</p>

<p><strong>Fly in the ointment</strong></p>

<p>However, not everything is perfect with the Endeavour. For one, while it’s great to have 10 gears, the Endeavour’s gearbox also tends to hunt between gears quite a bit to ensure maximum efficiency. Which means that, in normal driving, gear kick down can be a bit lethargic, which is quite annoying – especially when you’re trying to overtake. Plus, what doesn’t help here is the reduced output of the new 2.0-litre engine. The older 3.2 unit produced 197bhp and 470Nm, and that difference of almost 30bhp and 50Nm can be felt when pushing the Endeavour hard, as the engine takes a bit of time to really pick up the pace. But, then again, this is simply the price to be paid to meet the new emissions standards – which requires engines to be downsized.</p>

<p>However, all said and done, with its combination of on- and off-road ability, a refined powertrain, excellent driving appeal and now even a slightly reduced price tag, the Endeavour remains our SUV of choice in its segment. And if you’re looking for a full-sized SUV that is fun to drive, I don’t think you can do better than the Endeavour in its price bracket.</p>

2020 Ford Endeavour 2.0-litre Review: First Drive

Keeping the new emission regulations in mind, Ford India has taken the opportunity to upgrade the powertrain of the Endeavour completely. The engine being offered now is a brand-new 2.0-litre turbodiesel unit, which produces 168bhp and 420Nm of torque.

<p><em><strong>It was the Endeavour that started the SUV boom for Ford in India. Now in its third-generation, and facelifted, will it be able to regain its once segment-leading position? We take it into the sand dunes of Rajasthan to find out.&nbsp;</strong></em></p>

<p>It’s true that Ford began its SUV journey in India in earnest with the EcoSport, but it was actually the Endeavour that set Ford rolling in India in the SUV segment. The first two generations of the Endeavour were quite successful, in fact, so-much-so that the first-generation Endeavour was what created the large SUV segment in the Indian market. However, over the years – for a multitude of reasons – sales of the Endeavour haven’t been up to Ford’s expectations. With the new facelifted version of the Endeavour, Ford India is looking to reposition itself and regain its footprint in a segment that’s undisputedly dominated by the Toyota Fortuner.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Minimal reorganisation</strong><br />
First things first, the latest version of the Endeavour has undergone minimal changes, focusing primarily on styling tweaks, equipment count and rationalisation on the number of trim versions offered. The inherent abilities of the Endeavour – both on and off the road – remains unchanged. And this is what Ford India wanted to prove when they offered to take us into the sand dunes of Sam, outside Jaisalmer, for a true-blue dune-bashing experience.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, before we get into the dune bashing, let’s talk a bit about the car first. What’s interesting is that the spec sheet of the new Endeavour is essentially the same as the outgoing car. It’s offered with two engine options – a 3.2-litre and a 2.2-litre diesel – and two transmission options, a six-speed automatic and a manual for the 2.2, which only comes with two-wheel drive, and an automatic with four-wheel drive for the 3.2.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Some of the design changes include a new large trapezoidal chrome grille – a design trademark for Ford vehicles worldwide – with three horizontal slats, front and rear skid plates and a new design for the 18-inch alloy wheels, which I think looks quite good. Overall, the Endeavour, with its butch stance, has massive street presence. I don’t think I’ve ever heard anything negative about its styling, which can only be a good thing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The equipment count has also increased, with six airbags as standard on the car – the Titanium+ versions gets seven airbags – along with a host of other features, such as handsfree tailgate operation. The Endeavour also features an active noise cancellation system, which is quite interesting. It uses a combination of mics, speakers and a processor to play countering noise inside the cabin, which reduces the engine noise filtering into the car. And while driving it, you can actually feel the effect of the system – as the cabin feels quite well isolated. And unless you’re flooring the throttle completely, the engine noise remains impressively muted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The cabin, on the whole, is a nice place to spend time in. There’s plenty of room and the seats are quite comfortable. However, its high ride height means that getting in and out of the car may require some effort. The quality levels seem quite good, and, overall, it has a pretty well-designed interior that feels premium and functional at the same time.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The standard-fit 8-inch touchscreen SYNC 3 multimedia system also comes in for praise – I was quite impressed with the interface of the system. Unlike many other systems with small icons, the Ford system features large block-like controls on the touchscreen, making them very easy to operate while driving.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Powering through</strong><br />
Out on the smooth, flowing roads of Jaisalmer, as we headed towards the Sam Sand Dunes, the Endeavour made a fantastic first impression. Remember, it’s a vehicle based on a ladder frame chassis, which means that you expect the usual issues, like a jiggly ride, vague steering and a feeling of heft, given the heavy kerb weight. But not in the Endeavour, for it masks all this brilliantly.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Endeavour has fantastic ride quality and excellent high-speed ability. In fact, I don’t think I’ve driven a more composed and comfortable ladder frame vehicle before. I don’t possess enough technical knowledge to know exactly how the Ford engineers have achieved this feat, but I possess enough knowledge about cars to know that this a hell of a feat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Endeavour is a large SUV that truly feels like a driver’s car, just as a Ford should. A special word here for its steering feel – despite its heft and size, the steering responds immediately, gives you great feedback and is great fun to handle. The only thing that makes its presence felt every now and then is the high centre of gravity and kerb weight of the Endeavour, but, then again, there’s only so much you can do against the laws of physics.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bashing the dunes, though, was a completely different experience and gave me a clearer idea of the vast abilities of the Endeavour. In the 3.2-litre trim, the Endeavour has an intelligent four-wheel drive system, along with an electronic rear differential lock and 4x4 low mode. Now, it comes with four driving modes, of which we naturally chose Sand mode. Pair all this hardware with a quick shifting, six-speed gearbox, and the Endeavour has all the boxes ticked for some serious dune bashing. But the real party trick is the 197bhp and 470Nm of torque from its 3.2-litre engine. Pair this with the excellent off-road hardware, and you’ll get an idea of the way it powered through everything that the dunes could throw at us. In fact, on the really difficult parts of the dunes, the ample power and torque really pulled the car through.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Having bashed some dunes and flattened the throttle along the wide, flowing and empty roads of Jaisalmer, I can safely say that the Endeavour is by far the best driver’s car in its segment. The combination of a powerful engine, quick shifting gearbox and a fantastically sorted ride, handling and steering package makes it a hoot to drive. And, at the same time, it remains comfortable for other occupants too, while retaining the practicality that a vehicle of its size offers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>My only gripe is that I would have preferred paddle shifters, for even though the gearbox works very well, sometimes I did feel the need for some manual control.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Hard to resist</strong><br />
Having tested its abilities in a variety of conditions, I will make a statement that I don’t often make – the Endeavour is hands down the best vehicle in its segment in every aspect. Be it driving appeal, ride quality or off-road ability, the Endeavour is simply terrific. The only issue that the Endeavour truly faces in our market is that the Ford brand name is simply not as well regarded as Toyota, which makes the Fortuner the default choice for most customers.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, with Ford working overtime over the past few years on solving this issue, they claim that the Endeavour has the lowest maintenance cost in its segment (68 paise per kilometre for the 2.2 and 72 paise for the 3.2 over 100,000 kilometres). Now, this is something that might tip the scale in favour of the Endeavour. In fact, with its now reduced pricing, I’d say that if I were looking to buy a large SUV with my own money, I would buy the Endeavour with my eyes closed. How’s that for a recommendation! &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
