<p>Though the Kona Electric&nbsp;had impressive specifications for an electric vehicle, it&nbsp;unfortunately didn't&nbsp;see much success in terms of sales thanks to its outdated crossover design and interior. In about&nbsp;five years, Hyundai could sell only&nbsp;2,329 units of the Kona EV in India. The Kona EV&nbsp;was assembled in India via CKD (completely knocked down)&nbsp;kits.&nbsp;</p>

<h2>Hyundai Creta EV: Successor to Kona EV?</h2>

<p>Hyundai India hasn't revealed the reason behind this move.&nbsp;However, it could be done to replace the Kona EV with the upcoming Creta EV. Plus, no rumours are floating around that claim&nbsp;that Hyundai will bring&nbsp;the next-generation Kona Electric to the domestic market, even though the model&nbsp;has already transitioned to a second generation elsewhere.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Spotted on multiple occasions, the Creta EV will be launched in India in January 2025.&nbsp;The Creta EV is Hyundai India's&nbsp;first mass-market EV, which will be manufactured at the company's Chennai plant. It will enter production in the country&nbsp;by the end of this year and, since it&nbsp;shares many bits (design elements, platform) with the internal combustion engine-powered Creta, we expect Hyundai to&nbsp;build its upcoming EV&nbsp;alongside the standard Creta to keep costs in check.</p>

As for the the battery and motor specs,&nbsp;the Creta EV&nbsp;will likely run on a 45kWh&nbsp;battery pack sending power to a front-mounted electric motor. The motor is expected to churn out 136bhp and&nbsp;255Nm of&nbsp;torque. Also,&nbsp;the EV&nbsp;could come with fast-charging capabilities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Coming to the interior, the increased overall dimensions and wheelbase of the SUV have resulted in bigger&nbsp;cabin space.&nbsp;The electric crossover's wheelbase has been expanded by 60mm, making it roomier&nbsp;on the inside. The interior has been remodelled in a futuristic manner, with two 12.3-inch screens combining to form a digital instrument cluster and touchscreen infotainment display. The gear selector has been relocated from the centre console to a stalk behind the steering wheel, making additional storage space available.</p>

The 2023 Hyundai Kona has been unveiled for international markets. Three different powertrain options are available for the new model: pure ICE, hybrid, and electric. The second-generation Kona sports a radically new look and is nearly six inches longer than its predecessor.

<p>It was only last month when Hyundai launched its first ever fully electric vehicle, the Kona Electric,&nbsp;in India. At Rs 25.30 lakh (ex-showroom), it carried a very tempting price-tag for what is a full-blown electric vehicle. However, thanks to the Government of India’s recent announcement of reducing GST on electric vehicles, the deal on the Kona EV has sweetened further. Its price has now gone down by a full Rs 1.59 lakh, meaning the Kona EV now carries a price tag of Rs 23.71 lakh (ex-showroom)!</p>

<p>The GST rate on electric vehicles was reduced from 12 per cent earlier to 5 per cent, effective August 1, 2019. The reduction in taxes means that all the electric vehicles are now more affordable than a month ago. In fact, the Kona Electric&nbsp;is probably one of the biggest beneficiaries from the change in the taxation plan. That being said, even at its launch price, the Kona Electric&nbsp;has already&nbsp;caught the attention of a lot of environment conscious buyers as Hyundai claims to have received 152 bookings&nbsp;of the EV&nbsp;already.</p>

<p>The Kona EV features a liquid-cooled 39.2kWh Li-ion battery pack and the EV is claimed to have a power output of 134bhp, along with 395Nm of torque. It can do 0-100km/h in 9.7 seconds and has an ARAI certified range of 452km on a full charge. <p>First shown at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show, the Kona Electric is available in two versions globally. However,&nbsp;HMIL has introduced a single, standard-range derivative here. It is driven&nbsp;by a Permanent-Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM),&nbsp;which draws its power from a liquid-cooled 39.2kWh Li-ion battery pack. The performance figures are pegged at 134bhp &amp; 395Nm of torque and keeping in mind that an EV offers 100 per cent of the available torque from the word go, the Kona Electric can do its 0-100km/h dash in 9.7 seconds.&nbsp;Keeping the performance figures aside, the Kona's main highlight is the fact that it gets an ARAI-certified driving range of 452km, 3km more than its international WLTP-certified range of 449km. <p>Inside, the Kona EV offers all-digital instrumentation, as&nbsp;it gets a&nbsp;7-inch floating infotainment touchscreen and an instrument cluster of the same size. The Kona EV also ditches the conventional gear shifter for an electronic shift-by-wire setup, with dedicated buttons for each gear. By using the one-touch paddle shifters, the driver can take control of the four levels of the&nbsp;regenerative braking system, for better efficiency. A long-press of the left paddle shifter can bring the Kona&nbsp;Electric to a halt,&nbsp;without the intervention of the brake pedal.</p>

<p>For effective battery&nbsp;management, which is a crucial aspect of any EV, Hyundai has given the Kona Electric four&nbsp;driving modes: ECO, ECO+, COMFORT &amp; SPORT. While the ECO mode offers maximum charge conservation, the SPORT&nbsp;mode unleashes maximum performance.&nbsp;Further, features like 'Smart Eco Pedal Guide',&nbsp;Utility Mode &amp;&nbsp;Driver-Only Air Con offer even more ways to maximise the driving range of the Kona Electric.</p>

<p>The Kona Electric can be charged through three different methods: A&nbsp;Level III&nbsp;100kW DC fast charger can provide up to 80 per cent of charge in less than an hour. The next is through a Level II Regular AC charger, which can&nbsp;charge the battery completely in about 6 hours. The third charging option is a Level 1 AC portable charger (slowest of the three),&nbsp;capable of providing a 50km driving&nbsp;range in about three hours.</p>

<p>In terms of styling, the Kona EV looks quite different from its hybrid and ICE-powered derivatives, thanks to a closed-off front grille and aerodynamically-optimised 17-inch alloy wheels. However, the entire Kona model family&nbsp;has&nbsp;the twin-headlight design and LED taillights in common. The feature list of the Kona Electric includes 6 airbags, ABS with EBD,&nbsp;Hill Assist Control (HAC), an electric sunroof, ventilated front seats, 10-way power-assist driver's seat, a rear parking camera, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), etc.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To ensure that the Kona Electric also leads the way in terms of EV adoption in the country, HMIL will offer the Kona Electric with a 3-Year/Unlimited Km&nbsp;standard warranty, while the battery pack will carry an 8-Year/1,60,000Km warranty. Further, each Kona Electric will be offered with a Level II AC wall-mounted charger &amp; a Level I portable charger from the company&nbsp;(along&nbsp;with third-party installation support) at no extra cost and a 24*7 Roadside Assistance (RSA) subscription.</p>

<p>HMIL has also tied-up with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) to set up DC fast-charge stations at IOC's select fuel stations in some&nbsp;cities.&nbsp;</p>

To put it into a more comparable Indian context, with the Kona Electric, you can complete a&nbsp;Delhi-Agra-Delhi trip on a single charge, with still a few kilometres&nbsp;left to potter around town.</p>

<p>In the international markets, the Kona Electric is offered in two versions - a short-range version &amp; a long-range derivative. The former is a 134bhp version powered by a 39.2kWh battery pack, while the latter gets a 64kWh battery pack with a power output of 201bhp. Despite the different capacity &amp; power output, both versions produce the same levels of torque and propel the car to a similar top speed. However, going by the ARAI-driving range revealed, expect Hyundai to stick with the long-range version for India, which will take the CKD route to reach our shores.</p>
