<p>The time has come. The Jeep Grand Cherokee must return home after spending three months with us. Ever since I got the keys to this hulking SUV, I’ve been absolutely smitten. To be honest, it’s been a journey of highs and lows, but one that I’ll always remember. Let’s start with the highs, and perhaps the Grand Cherokee’s biggest strength – its road presence. Wherever it goes, it commands attention. Some wonder why the Compass / Meridian look has been dialled up to 11, while others stare in shock and awe. Side note: while not everyone turns back to look at this massive white SUV, it certainly attracts the attention of Fortuner, Scorpio, and Thar owners!</p>
<p> Another highlight is the ride quality. The Grand Cherokee effortlessly handles road undulations and potholes, remaining unfazed by bad surfaces, even at highway speeds. However, over large speed bumps, this softly sprung, colossal SUV makes its size and weight felt.</p>
<p>Being a Jeep, it naturally excels in off-roading. With multiple drive modes, the 4x4 system gives you the confidence to take it anywhere. For me, though, most of my time with it was spent on city roads, with a bit of highway driving thrown in – the very conditions where a car like this spends most of its time. And in that context, one notable point is fuel efficiency. The Grand Cherokee doesn’t shy away from sipping fuel by the bucket, averaging about 6 km/l during our time with the car.</p>
<p>Where the lows emerge, however, is in the fit and finish. For a price tag of `67.50 lakh (ex-showroom), it competes with the Germans, who, in terms of price-to-luxury ratio, seem to offer a better deal. The most surprising issue came during heavy rains – which only occurred in the final days of our review – when the Jeep started leaking water into the cabin. This is simply unacceptable. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt since it was a press car, used far more intensively than a customer vehicle would be, but it was still shocking.</p>
<p>To sum it up, the Grand Cherokee may have left a bitter taste in its final days, but I’ll remember it for the sweet memories we made along the way. In terms of car-to-price ratio – a metric that resonates with many Indian customers – the Jeep Grand Cherokee hits the sweet spot. It’s a gentle giant, capable of impressive energy and capabilities when called upon, yet it prefers to stay calm and composed, blending in with the crowd. Jeep Grand Cherokee Long Term Review, May 2025 Report

To sum it up, the Jeep Grand Cherokee may have left a bitter taste in its final days, but I’ll remember it for the sweet memories we made along the way.

<p>‘Oh my word, what in the world is that?!’ Has been the theme of the month for me. You see, our Founder and Editor-in-chief Dhruv Behl was kind enough to let me borrow the Jeep Grand Cherokee from our long-term test fleet for the last month. And ever since, even after over 700km clocked with the Jeeper, I still cannot get over the incredible presence this monolithic SUV has. In many ways, especially since we are a lot more used to seeing the Jeep Compass and the Jeep Meridian on the roads, the Grand Cherokee manages to go under the radar. But as it comes close, be it in your peripheral vision or your rear view mirror, it dawns upon people - this isn’t just any other Jeep, it is the ‘Grand’ daddy of them all! </p>
<p>Incredibly, though, the same surprises me even after all this time spent with the car. Just the other day, I went to the local market to buy some groceries. I parked the car without a second thought, actively remembering the list of items that I need to purchase - a tough task, seriously - and went on about my day. It was only while returning back to the car that I saw it towering over pretty much every single car that was parked alongside it! You would think that I would get used to this sight but no, the jaw keeps dropping every now and then.</p>
<p>It’s been the same even inside the car. Just the other day, I realised that the car has these incredible touches that show the attention to detail that Jeep has put into this SUV. And this is precisely why spending longer times with cars is necessary, because in any other scenario where we test it for a short duration, we have to go about making 3,400 gazillion kinds of content about the test car - and between it all, such things are easy to miss. For example, the car’s belt buckle is wrapped in this lovely soft touch material. Or how the fact that the rear camera feed which be seen on the inside rear view mirror helps you incredibly in case you happen to load the boot up to the top. I also loved the sheer amount of buttons on the centre console that giving you easy access to a lot of features even on the go, despite the car having three massive screens across the dash for an infotainment experience that’s no less than any luxury car. </p>
<p>All of it really makes you appreciate the effort that Jeep has put into the Grand Cherokee. Jeep Grand Cherokee Long Term Review, April 2025 Report

Just the other day, I realised that the car has these incredible touches that show the attention to detail that Jeep has put into this SUV.

<p>When you think Jeep, undoubtedly you picture the Wrangler – with its rugged go-anywhere appeal. But what if you wanted to retain a majority of that off-road ability but in a much more civilised everyday package. Then you need to think ‘Grand Cherokee.’ In fact, since its introduction in the US in the early 90s, it’s developed a legacy all its own. This fifth generation Grand Cherokee is the first one to make it to our shores, but it’s safe to say that it hasn’t exactly made much of a dent in the market. So, we thought we’d spend a couple of months with it to find out why. </p>
<p>The first thing that strikes you is its clean, typically Jeep, design – with that signature seven slat grille and squared off wheel arches. It’s a really good-looking machine, although there isn’t much to differentiate it from its smaller sibling, the Meridian, which is possibly one of the reasons why you don’t see (or notice) too many on our roads. The second thing that strikes you is its rather punchy 2.0-litre turbo-petrol with 268 horses mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, sending power to all four wheels. Surprisingly, the drivetrain is brilliant, and at 7.4km/l even the fuel economy isn’t as bad as I was expecting. </p>
<p>But there are a few shortcomings. The cabin feels cheap in places, especially the faux leather. The low-speed ride is busier than it ought to be, and the steering is heavier than it should be. Plus, in some cases the cost cutting is perceptible, such as the Alpine sound system, which sounds cheap and tinny. </p>
<p>At just short of 80 lakhs on-road, what you get is an SUV that offers real go-anywhere ability, looks and feels imposing, but at the same time struggles to justify its price tag. Jeep Grand Cherokee Long Term Review, March 2025 Report

This fifth generation Grand Cherokee is the first one to make it to our shores, but it’s safe to say that it hasn’t exactly made much of a dent in the market.

<p>The Jeep Wrangler Willys ’41 Special Edition has made a remarkable impact in India, selling out within just weeks of its launch.&nbsp;With a price tag of Rs 73.24 lakh (ex-showroom), the Wrangler Willys ‘41 Special Edition was offered in limited numbers in India, with just 30 units earmarked for the market. This limited-edition model, celebrated for its rugged design and heritage-inspired features, quickly captured the attention of off-road enthusiasts and Jeep fans alike. Commenting on the occasion,&nbsp;Kumar Priyesh, Business Head &amp; Director – Automotive Brands, said: 'We are humbled and grateful for the enthusiastic response to the Wrangler Willys Limited Edition. The fact that it is now completely sold out reflects the deep love and trust our customers have in the Jeep brand. Jeep Wrangler Willys '41 Special Edition Sold Out in India Within Weeks of Launch

Under the hood, the Jeep Wrangler Willys '41 continues to use the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the standard model, producing 268bhp and 400Nm.


<p>The Jeep Commander, which goes by the name <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/jeep/meridian/">Meridian</a> in India, has received&nbsp;a more powerful 2.2-litre turbo diesel engine in Brazil.&nbsp;The new engine, available in the top-end Overland variant,&nbsp;delivers 197bhp and 450Nm — a significant bump of 29bhp and 70Nm over the older&nbsp;2.0-litre diesel unit, which produced 168bhp and 380Nm. While <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/jeep/">Jeep</a>&nbsp;has not officially confirmed the reason behind the engine upgrade, it is widely believed&nbsp;that the move was influenced by customer input and changing market demands.&nbsp;</p><p>Notably, the Indian version of the Meridian continues&nbsp;with the tried-and-tested 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine, which was also previously available in Brazil. Thanks to&nbsp;its local manufacturing, solid performance record, and adaptability to Indian&nbsp;driving conditions, this engine is likely to remain the&nbsp;preferred choice for the domestic market. The new Jeep will offer hybrid and fully electric variants to meet the demand of environmentally-conscious buyers. It is slated to go on sale in Europe first, with deliveries expected by the end of this year. In terms of design, the all-new Compass is inspired by the Jeep Avenger. For now, there's no official announcement, but we can expect the new-gen Compass to hit our shores sometime next year.&nbsp;</p>

Jeep Meridian Updated with More Powerful 197bhp 2.2-Litre Diesel Engine in Brazil

In India, the Jeep Meridian locks horns with the MG Gloster, the Skoda Kodiaq, and the Toyota Fortuner. It is powered by the proven 2.0-litre MultiJet II diesel engine.

<p><em>The Jeep Grand Cherokee is expected on our shores any day now, but can it really rival the Germans?</em></p>

<p>‘SRT’ (Street &amp; Racing Technology) is to Chrysler what ‘AMG’ is to Mercedes and ‘M’ is to BMW. And, before you scoff, bear in mind that SRT was originally conceived to develop the venomous Viper, which is today a properly modern supercar despite the fact that it’s powered by an engine from a freight train – an 8.4 litre V10! Or is that why it is a proper supercar in the first place? Anyway, that’s a debate for another time. What we have here is the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.</p>

<p>Our first experience with SRT came when we tested the Dodge Challenger (another Chrysler brand) SRT8 at the Dubai Autodrome for our 6th anniversary test last year. The Challenger proved that it not only looks fantastic, but is also quite adept at putting all its 470 horses to the ground.</p>

<p>The Grand Cherokee that we have here, believe it or not, has the same 6.4 litre HEMI V8 that was under the hood of the Challenger – HEMI, of course, points to Chryslers famous muscle car motors where the top of the combustion chamber is hemispherical in shape. Despite that, the one thing that let the Challenger down last year was a clumsy 5-speed automatic gearbox. The Jeep, though, is now fitted with ZF’s 8-speed transmission – which, for me, is one of the best gearboxes in existence today. Eight-speed gearbox or not though, the question is – can the Jeep’s chassis really handle 470 galloping horses?</p>

<p>After all, the last Cherokee I drove – over a decade ago now – struggled to stay in the same lane as you drove down the highway. Granted that particular car was quite tired even then. Not to mention the fact that American cars have come on in leaps and bounds since. After all, there’s nothing like the threat of obsolescence to whip you into shape – in this case with a little help from the Italians, as Chrysler is now majority owned by Fiat.</p>

<p>Fiat ownership means that we’ll see Jeep vehicles on our shores pretty soon, and that’s a good thing. And, more importantly, these vehicles really are all-new and cutting edge – which is even better. This Grand Cherokee, on the inside, is completely unrecognizable from typical American cars of just a few years ago. The biggest advancement made by Chrysler in the past few years has really been in the form and quality of its cabins. The cabin of the recently refreshed Grand Cherokee is now second to none – all the way from its switchgear and carbon fiber trim to its panoramic sunroof.</p>

<p>Let’s get back to the question at hand though – what of those 470 horses? Well, the truth is that they’re corralled surprisingly well by this 2.3 tonne behemoth. Of course, the Jeep is helped in this quest by 295/45 20-inch Pirelli tyres at all four corners. But that’s the least of it. It has independent front and rear suspension, which, in this case, features Bilstein adaptive dampers as well. Stopping power comes courtesy of massive Brembo brakes with six-pot calipers in front and four-pots at the back. And while they work really well, you do get a sense of just what they’re up against when you brake for a sharp corner after a long straight. There’s an initial moment when the weight of this Jeep reveals itself, before being subdued by the combo of Brembo and Bilstein.</p>

<p>Once you get hard on the anchors, you’re encouraged by just how well they do their job. So much so that you’re tempted to truly throw this SRT badged Jeep into the fast approaching bend. You’re further egged on by the extremely well bolstered seats and thick-rimmed, three-spoke, flat-bottomed steering wheel. So, you throw caution to the wind, hold your breath, and turn. Lo and behold, the Jeep does just as it’s told, and there’s simply no body-roll to speak of. As you gain confidence, you discover that the limits of this car are simply incredible.</p>

<p>Naturally, with a 6.4 litre HEMI under the hood, propulsion is never a concern. In fact, the massive screen in the center console even has a program that tells you just how much torque (out of 630Nm) and power you’re using at any given point in time. Even under hard acceleration, in normal conditions, I found myself using just about half of the available 470 horsepower. Naturally, with gadgets like these you find yourself playing adolescent games such as trying to access full power. I never did – at least not while I was looking at the screen anyway! Just for the record, it accelerates to 100km/h in under 5 seconds.</p>

<p>There’s another screen in the center of the instrument cluster, and that can even be programmed to show you a G-meter if you so desire. At first, you don’t quite understand the sense of all this race-derived gimmickry. But then you go find your favorite mountain road, and it all begins to make sense. Perhaps, the best part of this level of performance from a Jeep is the look on the face of Porsche drivers when they simply can’t keep up with you!</p>

<p>Problems? Well, the brake pedal is a little soft. And, while the steering is quick and precise, it’s not very communicative – you simply don’t know when physics is going to take over and spit this SUV off the road. It never does, there’s enough safety tech to ensure that much. There’s also plenty of safety tech that you can use at normal speeds as well. There are tyre pressure monitors and a rear camera. There’s adaptive cruise control with collision control. On the convenience front, it has all the in-car connectivity that you’d expect, as well as a power tailgate and remote start.</p>

<p>In India, it’s unlikely that we’ll ever see the SRT Cherokee. But we will get a very capable 3.0 litre common-rail diesel developing 240 horsepower. Now, it may not make anywhere near 500 horses, but it will be far more economical and also quite capable off-road as well – which has been a Jeep hallmark since 1941.</p>

<p>As for SRT – well, let’s just say that they know a thing or two about making a vehicle perform. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that I actually preferred the SRT8 powered Cherokee over the Challenger. Blasphemous perhaps, but true nonetheless – until I try a Challenger with either a manual or the ZF 8-speed gearbox that is.</p>

<p>But the lingering question is – will Jeep be able to take the premium manufacturers head-on in the Indian market? And while the answer to that depends a great deal on sales and service, on the product front the answer is a resounding yes. These are truly distinctive machines with a lot of presence, as always. Except now they come with cutting edge underpinnings and world-class levels of quality as well.</p>
