<p>The Kia Carens has been selling well in the market, surpassing the sales milestone of 2 lakh units since its launch in 2021. More than three years on, this three-row offering was due for an update. But instead of introducing a direct replacement for the old model, Kia has launched a new, more premium and feature-rich vehicle based on the Carens: the Carens Clavis. While Carens reflects its lineage, Clavis derives from a Latin phrase meaning ‘the Golden Key’. So, what key updates set the Carens Clavis apart from the standard Carens?</p>

<h2>Kia Carens Clavis Looks: MPV Turned SUV</h2>

<p>Despite sharing its underpinnings with the Carens, the Clavis sports a distinctly different look. This is largely due to design elements like the new Digital Tiger Nose grille and the striking Star Map LED DRLs paired with a redesigned headlamp cluster. The front fascia is mostly closed off – reminiscent of electric vehicles – and resembles Kia’s newer models like the Syros and EV9. A prominent silver-finished chrome skid plate at both ends adds a rugged, SUV-like character, further enhanced by the raised bonnet, which gives the front-end profile a more commanding presence.</p><p>

<p>Step inside the Clavis, and you are welcomed by a noticeably more premium and modern cabin. There’s a clear focus on technology and aesthetics, with improved materials on the dashboard that are both visually appealing and well-finished.</p><p>

While it saves space on the dashboard, its usability while driving is questionable, as it requires taking your eyes off the road.</p><p>The second row remains largely unchanged. The Clavis is offered in both 6- and 7-seat configurations, similar to the Carens.</p><p>

As for the third row, it’s reasonably comfortable for short trips but is more suitable for children than adults due to limited under-thigh support and legroom. That said, Kia has thoughtfully equipped the third row with AC vents, reading lights, two USB-C ports, and cupholders, adding to the overall practicality.</p>

<h2>Kia Carens Clavis Driving Experience: Comfort-Focussed and Easygoing</h2>

<p>The drivetrain options for the Clavis are the same as the Carens – a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol, and a 1.5-litre diesel engine. Power and torque figures are also the same, but the Clavis now gets a 6-speed manual transmission option with the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol variant.</p><p>

<p>The Carens Clavis is undoubtedly a step up from the standard Carens. It offers a more modern design and additional features while retaining the plush ride quality and versatile powertrain options that made the original appealing.</p><p>

Kia’s excellent use of materials and textures – along with soft-touch surfaces, ambient lighting, and a clever floating console – makes the cabin feel premium. There’s plenty of room across all three rows, with the second and third rows folding flat to free up generous luggage capacity. The flat floor and bench-style layout make it genuinely comfortable for six or seven occupants. Add to that a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree camera, and connected-car features, and it feels properly loaded for family use.</p>

<p>Under the skin, the Carens Clavis EV shares its underpinnings with the Creta EV. It’s safe to say that Kia has delivered some strong products in the Indian market – from the Seltos to the Sonet and the Carens. Joining the lineup now is the Syros – a sub-4m SUV positioned between the Sonet and the Seltos. With its tall-boy stance and 2,550mm wheelbase, the Syros has been engineered to offer impressive cabin space. This becomes evident the moment you step into the second row – the seats can slide back to create additional legroom, albeit at the expense of boot space. <p>Just like the exterior, the Syros’ dashboard carries a distinctive design language. You get a two-spoke, flat-bottom ‘squircle’ steering wheel loaded with controls. The design may be unconventional, but it feels good to hold. Taking the centre stage is a massive 30-inch display that integrates three individual screens – an infotainment unit, a digital instrument cluster, and a dedicated panel for climate controls.</p>

<p>The only aspect likely to divide opinion is its exterior styling. The minimalistic robot-like face of this compact SUV won’t appeal to everyone. That’s the risk with radical design choices, and Kia seems to be learning that with the Syros. <p>Under the hood, both the 1.5-litre turbo-diesel and 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engines deliver punchy performance. Our test car was the turbo-petrol paired with the DCT – it’s an engine that loves to be pushed. Sure, the tall stance leads to some body roll and understeer around corners, but the direct steering more than makes up for them. Once you commit to a line, the Syros holds it with confidence. A few months ago, we tested some ‘hot hatches’ around a tight and twisty go-kart track; guess which car we used to film them? Yes, the Syros. That alone should tell you how capable and versatile this machine really is.

Kia Syros at autoX Awards: Best Cars of 2025 Ranked

Our test car’s turbo-petrol DCT setup loves to be pushed. While the Kia Syros' tall stance causes mild body roll, the direct steering keeps it composed through corners.

<p>And just like that, three months with the Kia Syros have flown by. It’s time to bid adieu to this feature-rich compact SUV, and our final month has only reinforced our initial positive impressions. After another 1,100 kilometres on the odometer, the Syros continues to be a delightful daily companion, making it genuinely challenging to find any significant faults.</p>
<p>The pre-monsoon heat in Delhi NCR was no match for the Syros’ ventilated front seats, a feature that proved to be an absolute blessing during long, sweltering commutes. Weekend family outings were a breeze, thanks to the reclining rear seats that offered a comfortable haven for both kids and senior parents. The ease of getting in and out was particularly appreciated by the elders in the family.</p>
<p>Dominating the dashboard is the stunning 30-inch Trinity Panoramic Display, which is as premium to use as it is to behold. Its crisp, high-definition screen and lightning-fast response add a touch of modern luxury to the cabin.<br>
    Under the hood, the 1.5-litre CRDI VGT diesel engine paired with the 6-speed automatic transmission is a gem. The powertrain is punchy, exceptionally smooth, and remarkably refined, with engine clatter being minimal. What truly impressed us was its efficiency, consistently delivering a mileage of 17-ish kmpl. This frugal nature, combined with its practical attributes, makes it an ideal long-distance tourer. The generous 465-litre boot space was a lifesaver during our numerous work shoots, easily swallowing camera equipment and even serving as a makeshift tracking vehicle. The cabin is also thoughtfully designed with an abundance of storage spaces, from the glove box and door bins to the armrest, and the plethora of charging ports ensures every passenger’s device stays juiced up.</p>
<p>The ride quality has been a standout feature, especially with the monsoon-battered roads of the NCR. The suspension does a commendable job of soaking up imperfections, providing a comfortable and composed ride for daily use.<br>
    However, no car is perfect, and we had to nitpick to find some flaws. The futuristic design, while modern, does give off strong MPV vibes to some, often requiring an explanation to friends and family about its premium positioning and value. Another minor gripe is the soft suspension setup. While excellent for everyday comfort, it feels a tad spongy during spirited drives through corners, not quite inspiring confidence.</p>
<p>As we hand back the keys, the Kia Syros leaves us with overwhelmingly positive memories. It’s a well-rounded, feature-laden, and practical compact SUV that excels as a comfortable and efficient family vehicle. It’s a compelling package that will be hard to overlook in its segment.</p>
