The Kylaq has been a strong success for Skoda India. What plans do you have for this sub-4m platform beyond the Kylaq?

The Kylaq is still a new baby – just six months old – and we’re just enjoying its success right now. With this car, we’ve entered many new territories – and I think there’s still a lot of potential to unlock next year.

The recently launched Octavia RS has seen huge interest and strong sales. Does this demonstrate that the enthusiast community in India is now big enough to support more accessible performance cars in your portfolio?

Definitely! The number of enthusiasts today is far higher than a decade ago. But India never lacked enthusiasts. I remember attending my first Auto Expo in college and seeing a million people waiting to see cars. The passion has always been there. What has changed is that more people can now afford to indulge in that passion.

One of the reasons we brought the Octavia RS to India is because it shares its DNA with our mass-market products – the Slavia, Kushaq and Kylaq. They’re engineered by the same teams and share powertrains. So, in a sense, the exhilaration of the Octavia RS also exists in our other cars.



You were previously the Brand Director of Volkswagen India. What are the key differences and similarities between the two brands?

From a product portfolio perspective, Skoda currently has a more rounded lineup – from the Kylaq to the Kodiaq – though the platforms are similar. The bigger difference is in brand DNA, and whom each brand attracts. I’ve seen that Skoda customers are shaped by the premium legacy of cars like the Octavia and Superb – typically, they’re business owners or individuals further along in their economic journey. Volkswagen customers have historically been more corporate and professional.

There’s been talk for some time that Skoda will re-enter the diesel segment. Is there a timeline that you can share?

Diesel is always a topic of discussion. At the moment, there’s no clarity on when we might bring diesel back. But everything is always on the table. With the recent GST changes, diesel may start making more sense again. We’ll watch the trends to see if it’s economically viable, and, if so, why not?

Demand has seen a boost post GST 2.0. How long do you see this momentum lasting?

It’s only been a month, and the festive season was already expected to be big – but GST added another 10-15% on top of those sales. November is also looking stronger than a typical post-festive month. I believe this momentum will sustain. These GST changes are not short-term – they have the potential to fundamentally reshape the economy, especially for the auto industry because of the slab changes.

There were no additional GST benefits for EVs, and EVs have dipped as a share of total sales. Does the government need to do more for EVs?

From a taxation and policy point of view, EVs already have many benefits. The challenge now is building robust supply chains and scaling them in a cost-effective way, along with improving charging infrastructure – particularly outside metro cities. Once those strengthen, EV adoption will rise. EVs are undoubtedly the future, but the pace of adoption has slowed globally, not just in India. What we thought would be a 5-to-7-year transition may now take 10-to-15 years.

Lastly, what are your plans for next year?

I expect the momentum to continue in 2026, though it’s too early to predict trends. From our side, there will be a lot of product action – the first full year of the Kylaq, and we will be looking at enhancing the range further. The Kushaq and Slavia facelifts are also in the works. I also want to expand the RS badge – the Octavia RS was just the beginning. This electronically governed system proved to be exceptionally well-calibrated, regulating speed through precise brake modulation without abrupt inputs.&nbsp;

We’ve waited long enough for the new-generation Skoda Kodiaq to finally make its way to India. But how much of it remains in this new version?

<h2>New Skoda Kodiaq Design &amp; Dimensions</h2>

The latest Skoda Kodiaq definitely takes a more extroverted approach, while still exuding a premium appeal. Though it’s unmistakably a Kodiaq, the wider grille, along with the light bar in this L&amp;K version, gives it a distinctive edge. The tiered lighting is now more prominent, and when driving at night, it’s about as effective as one would like it to be.<div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

The more intricate air vents and the floating effect of the door handles make the interior feel even more premium. What hasn’t been compromised, however, are the thoughtful touches Skoda calls their ‘Simply Clever’ features. One standout feature are the configurable dials. These rotary controls serve multiple functions, managing climate, seat, and drive modes, offering a far more intuitive and easier to use alternative to touch-based interfaces.Another practical addition is the new central tunnel. With Skoda shifting to a column-mounted gearshifter, the Kodiaq’s cabin feels more spacious and less cluttered, even though the overall space remains unchanged from the previous model.<div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

Like before, the Kodiaq comes generously equipped. From behind the wheel, the experience doesn’t feel drastically different at first. It’s easy to find a comfortable driving position, the SUV feels smaller than its size when manoeuvring, and the seats are very comfortable. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine, now producing 201bhp, is a significant upgrade.<div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

 It continues to make 320Nm of torque and is paired with a seven-speed DCT, but its drivability is remarkably better. This sense of improved response carries through the rev range, where a linear surge of power makes acceleration feel more intuitive. As before, performance ramps up significantly past 4,000rpm, but it’s now accompanied by a more engaging rasp from the engine.

 
 
 
 


The new Kodiaq rides much like its predecessor. On smooth roads, it glides along with a composed presence that delivers a genuine luxury car experience. However, over broken and uneven roads, the suspension becomes quite noisy, and at low speeds, sharp bumps can filter into the cabin. As before, though, the ride improves noticeably as speeds rise. The Kodiaq settles into a confident, comfortable pace that makes rear-seat travel particularly soothing.<div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

Despite the removal of the adaptive damping system in this update, the Kodiaq maintains good ride quality over most surfaces at higher speeds. That said, when pushed hard, its mass does begin to show. In tighter corners, it rolls and runs wide, but keep your speed and inputs measured, and the Kodiaq will flow along a winding road with decent agility and a touch of engagement.

The steering contributes positively to this experience – it’s light enough to make city driving feel easy, yet precise enough at higher speeds to inspire confidence, giving you a sense of control. Also worth noting is the improvement to the braking feel: gone is the abrupt pedal response seen in earlier Skodas. Braking now feels more progressive, allowing you to modulate the brakes better.

<h2>2025 Skoda Kodiaq Price &amp; Verdict: Is It Worth the Premium?</h2>

Priced at ₹48.69 lakh for this L&amp;K version, the new Kodiaq picks up right where the previous model left off. It has gotten significantly more expensive, and while the infotainment screen could be more intuitive and some plastic bits don’t feel as premium as before, the overall cabin feels more special nonetheless. The smoother, more refined engine and well-sorted dynamics continue to make this a genuine luxury experience, without a luxury price tag.<div style="width: 100%; height: auto;" class="post-image">

Skoda Kodiaq First Drive Review - Setting a Benchmark

With the launch of the second-gen Kodiaq, Skoda brings Indian buyers a fresh contender in the three-row SUV space. But is it worth it?

As you go through this month’s issue, you’ll see that the Skoda Kylaq emerged as one of the winners in our ‘Best of 2025’ Awards. While it faced tough competition from several rivals, it stood out as one of the best products launched in the Indian market over the past year. What makes it so great, you may ask? The fact that it’s based on the fantastic MQB-A0-IN platform means that, compared to other cars, it already has an edge in terms of hardware. Pair this with the excellent 1.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine and a smooth 6-speed automatic gearbox, and you already have a formidable package on offer.
However, what truly sets the Kylaq apart is that it brings together many qualities most of its competitors can’t match. For instance, Skoda’s solid build quality shines through the more you drive and experience the car. The suspension setup, too, has been executed very well by Skoda’s engineers - it is both fun to drive and comfortable, an unmatched combination in this segment. I’ve previously criticised Skoda’s latest dual-spoke steering wheel design, but after spending time with the Kylaq, I’ve actually come around to how it looks. Sure, I still prefer a three-spoke steering wheel, but the dual-spoke design isn’t bad either. The Kylaq, with its sales success, has also given Škoda Auto Volkswagen India a shot in the arm, and we can expect a range of new products from the brand in India over the next 12 to 18 months. This begins with the launch of the new Octavia RS, which I’m eager to drive as soon as possible. The success of this model already is evident from the fact that it was sold out within minutes of its announcement in India.
The success of the Kylaq also means a great deal for the Skoda brand, as it shows that a product designed for India can be a truly successful endeavour. More such products can be expected from the brand in the future as it achieves greater success and higher sales volumes. As someone who loves driving cars that are both fun to drive and easy to live with every day, the arrival of more enthusiast-friendly products can only be a good thing — for Skoda India and us Indian customers alike.

Skoda Kylaq Long Term Report: Month 5 - Well Deserved Laurels

The Kylaq’s ‘Best of 2025’ win didn’t surprise us — five months in, it remains one of the most impressive new models we’ve lived with this year.

Ever since its launch in the Indian market, the Skoda Kodiaq has been the brand’s flagship SUV. Given the market in recent years, it now occupies a unique position in its price range. For instance, if you’re looking for a three-row SUV with a genuinely usable third row in the ₹35 – 50 lakh price bracket, the Kodiaq is the only monocoque option – every other rival in that range is a ladder-frame SUV.

So, what difference does that make? Simply put, all else being equal, a monocoque offers better refinement, handling, and ride comfort than a ladder-frame design. Coming back to the Kodiaq, the latest generation was launched in India in April this year, and compared to its predecessor, Skoda has done an excellent job of making it more premium, improving quality, and adding features. Thanks to the recent GST cuts, the Kodiaq is now an even more attractive proposition, with prices starting at just under ₹40 lakh (ex-showroom). On the road, it delivers an impressively refined and comfortable ride and is a pleasure to drive, whether it’s for daily commutes or long-distance journeys. Its practicality and overall quality further add to its appeal. Honestly, if I were shopping for a three-row SUV in this segment, the Kodiaq would be my top pick.

On the track, the Kodiaq managed to surprise us. While Skoda Group cars are known for their dynamic ability, the Kodiaq exceeded expectations with its sharp handling and smooth power delivery. The steering feels direct and communicative, and the all-wheel-drive system does an excellent job of putting power down on corner exits. The Kodiaq scored highly on quality, refinement, practicality, and ride and handling. With the new pricing, its value-for-money quotient has also improved. It even scored decently on X-Factor. All of this means that, despite being a large SUV, the Kodiaq performed exceptionally well overall, missing out on a Top 5 finish in our ‘Best of 2025’ rankings by just a few points.

Skoda Kodiaq at autoX Awards: Best Cars of 2025 Ranked

The Skoda Kodiaq’s direct steering and effective AWD give strong corner exits. Its electronic aids stay barely intrusive, helping deliver a more engaging drive.

The sub-4-metre compact SUV segment is one of the most fiercely contested spaces in the Indian automotive market. With customer preferences increasingly shifting towards SUVs, this category alone accounts for a massive share of overall sales. Naturally, every mass-market manufacturer wants a piece of this lucrative pie. So, it was no surprise when Skoda India decided to enter this segment to expand its presence, boost volumes, and reach a wider customer base. And that’s how the Kylaq was born, based on the highly acclaimed MQB-A0-IN platform, which also underpins several models that have won awards in our previous annual tests.What makes the MQB platform so respected is its inherent strength and rigidity, which allows for a car’s suspension and ride-and-handling characteristics to be optimised for an excellent all-round driving experience across varied conditions. This gives the Kylaq a natural edge over many of its rivals. Powering the SUV is a single engine option – the tried-and-tested 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol unit. It produces 118bhp and 250Nm of torque and comes paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. Some might argue that a diesel engine could have broadened its appeal, but realistically, diesel demand in this category is all but dead. Not to mention that the Skoda-VW Group no longer offers diesel vehicles in India altogether.

In terms of design, the Kylaq scores high with its signature grille, balanced stance, and smart detailing. Unlike some compact SUVs that look like afterthoughts, the Kylaq feels cohesive and well-proportioned. The interior follows the same philosophy – clean, symmetrical, and clearly designed with attention to detail – something Skoda has long been known for. However, being the brand’s entry-level offering, there’s some evidence of cost-cutting in the materials and surfaces, which is reflected in the jury’s quality scores. Its scores also highlight that rear seat space is another area where the Kylaq could have done better – it feels a bit constricted.

Despite these shortcomings, two aspects make the Kylaq stand out. First, while the 1.0-litre engine exhibits a hint of turbo lag at low speeds, its overall performance combined with the gearbox is excellent. Add to that the impressive ride quality, sharp handling, and communicative steering, and you have an SUV that’s genuinely fun to drive, both in the city and on the track. Second, with the post-GST price revision, the Kylaq now starts at ₹7.55 lakh (ex-showroom), offering outstanding value for money. That too is reflected in its scoring. Judging by its strong sales and growing popularity, it’s clear that customers see the Kylaq as a worthy product, and we believe it fully earns its place as a winner in its category.

You wait ages for a bus to arrive, and then two show up at once. Those were my first thoughts when Skoda announced the arrival of the fourth-generation Octavia RS in India - right after Volkswagen launched the iconic Golf GTI. The only difference is that these two aren't buses. In fact, they're two of the best everyday performance cars in the world. And for the first time ever, both have landed in India together. Naturally, this has petrolheads across the country jumping up and down in excitement - whether they can they can afford one or not, well, it doesn't really matter.

Now, over the past few months, I've driven the Golf GTI to my heart's content, and I've concluded that it's the perfect everyday fun car for Indian enthusiasts. The Octavia RS, though, threatens to change that. It's more spacious, more practical, and a tad more affordable - while promising the same explosive performance and razor-sharp handling. But does it actually deliver? I spent a few laps at the Buddh International Circuit with it to find out.

Powering the Octy RS is the same drivetrain as the Golf GTI - a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine producing 261bhp and 370Nm, sending power to the front wheels via a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox and a trick electronic differential. Since the RS is a bigger, heavier car, it's half a second slower to 100km/h (6.4s vs 5.9s). That said, when you're gunning it down the back straight of the BIC, you'll barely notice the difference - the RS is plenty quick.






The numbers on the speedo climb rapidly as the scenery dissolves into a blur. I clocked 202km/h (GPS-verified) on the back straight before stomping on the brakes. Like the GTI, the RS's drivetrain feels perfectly tuned for maximum performance. The engine is a free-revving unit, and the DSG complements it beautifully with lightning-quick shifts.

 The party trick, of course, is the handling. Like the Golf GTI, it's hard to believe this Skoda is front-wheel drive. The steering is sharp, the nose darts into corners without a sign of understeer, and the grip levels are extraordinary. Compared to the Golf, it feels a touch more stable mid-corner but slightly less pointy at turn-in - courtesy of its 50mm longer wheelbase and extra weight. Braking performance is solid, although the pedal on my particular RS went soft after two hot laps. Understandable, given that the car had already been through a lot of abuse in the sessions earlier that day - and, I can assure you, nobody was taking it easy out there!

The biggest highlight of the Octy RS, just like the GTI, is how accessible its performance is to everyone. It fits like a glove - intuitive, confidence-inspiring, and fast from the get-go. Want proof? Of the three laps I got, I managed a 2:35 lap time - with four people onboard - without breaking a sweat (check out the onboard video on our Instagram and YouTube). And that's the point - the Octavia RS is a more practical avatar of the Golf GTI.

 You get the same thrills but with extra space for your family and luggage (600 litres vs 380 litres). It's also more feature-rich, with electric front seats, massage functions, and a 360-degree camera. I also prefer the Alcantara dashboard and sporty seats of the RS over the rather spartan interior of the GTI.



<h2>Verdict</h2>

The Golf GTI is the ultimate hot hatch, but the Octavia RS adds a dose of practicality, without diluting the fun. However, to reach a final verdict after just a brief session with the RS is a difficult task - I need more seat time with both cars. But one thing's certain: it's not going to get any easier for me to make that decision later as well. Either way, there's not going to be any loser in this contest.

2025 Skoda Octavia RS First Drive Review - Czech Mate!

The new Skoda Octavia RS is a Volkswagen Golf GTI in a more practical and versatile avatar, but does it deliver the same thrills?

After a couple of months of intense adventure, the Kylaq had a slightly easier time this past month. Having seen a hectic period of extensive travel already, the Kylaq was for the past month mostly used by me for urban driving in Delhi-NCR. What did happen though, is that we’d recently gathered a bunch of cars for a test feature, and while driving the Kylaq with its competitors and even some much more expensive cars, I once again realized what a fantastic package it actually is. Based on the stellar MQB-A0-IN platform means that the base of the Kylaq is an excellent place to start with when it comes to dynamics and refinement. Pair this with the excellent 1.0-litre turbocharged engine and it makes the Kylaq a rather dynamic package. 
The suspension has just the right amount of stiffness for enthusiastic driving and yet provides very good ride comfort. If there is one aspect that I would like to see some improvement in, it would be the throttle response at low speeds, which can feel a bit laggy and the response from the engine in low-speed conditions could be a bit better. One aspect that I wouldn’t change though is the steering setup, which is light and yet offers tons of steering feel, which just adds to the driving pleasure. Given how dynamically sorted the Kylaq is, I always wonder what a pocket rocket it could be, if it was offered with the 1.5-litre turbo engine that the Kushaq has. It can clearly fit the engine bay of the Kylaq, and with its 148bhp output, Skoda could even sell it as a Kylaq RS! That would be one hell of a car to drive with the Kylaq’s compact size and sorted dynamics and could be a lot of fun. 
I’ve in the past criticized the dual-spoke steering wheel that Skoda’s products now feature, but having spent time with the Kylaq, I’ve actually come around to how they look. Sure, I still prefer a three-spoke steering wheel, but the dual-spoke is not bad either. However, it is now time for us to briefly bid goodbye to our Kylaq, as it is going on an adventure with the Skoda India folks all the way to Ladakh. Skoda India has introduced a new program for its customers to experience Skoda’s range of products on challenging terrain, and Kylaq is one of the cars being offered for the experience. And while the Kylaq will soon be back with us, I have to say, with the price reduction post the GST changes, the Kylaq, now starting at `7.5 lakh (ex-showroom), makes for a very tempting proposition for anyone looking for a sub-4 metre SUV.

Skoda Kylaq Long Term Report: Month 4 - On a Vacation

After months of non-stop adventures, the Škoda Kylaq finally took things easy — but even in the city, it reminded us why it’s such a well-rounded, fun-to-drive compact SUV

Skoda’s flagship sedan, the Superb, has added a feather in its cap by covering 2,831 kilometres on a single tank of diesel (regular). The extraordinary feat was accomplished by 2025 World Rally Champion Miko Marczyk, who set out to test the limits of fuel efficiency in real-world conditions. The record-setting run was achieved in a standard <a href="https://www.autox.com/new-cars/skoda/">Skoda</a> Superb 2.0 TDI Essence, the entry-level model sold in Poland. The car was chosen over the Octavia because of its larger 66-litre tank, and it achieved an average fuel consumption of 2.6L/100km, which equals an impressive 38.31 km/l. That’s almost twice the Superb’s official mileage of 20.8 km/l.It is important to note that the Skoda Superb Diesel used for this record attempt wasn’t a factory-prepared prototype but Miko Marczyk’s personal car, which had already covered around 20,000 kilometres.&nbsp;It remains mechanically the same, with the 2.0 TDI engine churning out 147.5bhp of maximum power and 360Nm peak torque, paired to a seven-speed dual-clutch DSG gearbox.&nbsp;However, it did undergo a few minor modifications, including the addition of low rolling-resistance tyres on 16-inch alloy wheels and Sportline suspension springs, which lowered the ride height by 15mm to optimise efficiency and improve aerodynamics.&nbsp;The record-setting run spanned roads across Poland, Germany, and France.Also Read:&nbsp;<a href="https://www.autox.com/news/car-news/skoda-octavia-rs-launched-in-india-at-rs-50-lakh-121985/">Skoda Octavia RS Launched in India at Rs 50 Lakh</a>Although diesel engines face heavy scrutiny for their environmental impact, the efficiency advantage of such units over their petrol&nbsp;counterparts is undeniable.
