Toyota Corolla Altis Highlights
Toyota's Corolla has been the most popular model for the brand, around the world – 154 countries in the world, to be precise. The car has proved to be a successful formula, thanks to Toyota's renowned reliability and of course its wide breadth of talents. We tell you if the Corolla Altis is worth every penny.
The Corolla Altis' new design boasts of tauter lines and angular body panels, and there's a sharp crease that runs across the sides of the car. Up-front, it is now aggressive, with those stylish headlamps and chrome grille. At the rear, it looks a little like the Camry. However, we felt the 16-inch wheels were a tad small for the Toyota Corolla Altis on-road price, but even so, there's terrific ground clearance for when one has to deal with a huge lump on the road. The overall design is definitely a step forward from the older model. Toyota clearly doesn't make boring-looking cars anymore.
The Toyota Corolla Altis variants for the petrol model are as follows: 1.8 G, 1.8 G CVT, 1.8 GL and 1.8 VL, while the diesel models are limited to just two: DG and DGL. Features include a 7.0-inch touchscreen with satellite navigation, audio controls and Bluetooth, two-zone climate control, electrically-folding and adjustable wing mirrors, automatic headlamps and wipers, cruise control, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, electrically-adjustable driver's seat, rear-view camera, a sunroof and front parking sensors. In terms of safety, it gets ABS, EBD, vehicle stability control, brake assist and seven airbags.
The cabin has been thoroughly reworked, while the centre console is now clutter-free. The two-tone dashboard looks subtle and tidy. There's also chrome outlining the touchscreen, along with some faux carbon-fibre, while the levels of quality are pretty good inside. At the rear, space inside the Toyota Corolla Altis new model is very impressive and the seats are very comfortable, thanks in part to the wheelbase extension. Also, the rear seats can be flipped down to expand the 470-litre capacity of boot space.
Engine Specifications & Performance
The Toyota Corolla Altis packs a 1.4-litre diesel motor that makes 87bhp and 205Nm of torque and a 1.8-litre petrol engine that produces 138bhp and 173Nm of torque. The former is paired to a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the latter gets the option of either a 7-speed CVT automatic or a 6-speed manual. While the diesel engine is tuned more for efficiency, it's the petrol engine that delivers better performance and manages being very refined as well. So, it’s worth opting for the relatively lesser priced Toyota Corolla Altis petrol over the diesel. The automatic gearbox works pretty quickly, and is a joy to use with the steering-mounted paddle-shifters. All manner of road irregularities are dealt with aplomb, thanks to the softly sprung suspension.
The Toyota Corolla Altis' ARAI-certified fuel efficiency figure is rated at 21.3kmpl for the diesel variants and 16.7kmpl for the petrol variants.
