Delhi’s been raining excessively this season, totally giving off Mumbai vibes! It has already surpassed its annual average and recorded its wettest August yet. While the cooler, rainy days are a nice break from a scorching summer, they bring along waterlogged streets, potholes, and traffic jams that make daily rides challenging. In Delhi, a lot of people rely on motorcycles and scooters, and it becomes highly difficult to keep the ride safe and avoid damage during this season. To help such daily commuters navigate the wet season safely and avoid expensive repairs, we’ve rounded up five essential tips to keep your motorcycle monsoon-ready.

You can’t escape waterlogged streets and hidden potholes on Indian roads, which become even more dangerous during the rainy season. Hence, while riding this season, make sure your two-wheeler's tyres and brakes are in the right condition. Check the tyres tread depth. If it is below the recommended level, it's best to get new tyres. Similarly, brakes become less effective on wet surfaces. It is important to check your brake pads and brake fluid to ensure they are in optimal condition.
Continuous exposure to moisture is one of the main reasons behind the accumulation of rust and corrosion on the parts of your bike. To keep rust at bay, it is recommended to apply a layer of protective wax or ceramic coating on the metal and painted parts. This will help create a barrier against water and grime. Also, make sure to clean the bike on a regular basis, as dirt and mud hold moisture and can speed up rusting.

There's no denying that water and electrical components are a dangerous combo. The monsoon season can make your two-wheeled companion face starting issues. Hence, it is imperative to check all visible wiring for any cuts or damage and use dielectric grease to protect the connections from water ingress.

Moreover, clean the battery terminals and apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion and ensure smooth starting. Also, make sure the lights on the vehicle, ranging from the headlight to the taillight, and indicators are working perfectly.

A well-maintained engine is undeniably imperative for hassle-free rides and unwanted mishaps. In the monsoon season, water can easily enter the engine and air filter, compromising performance. The air filter, in particular, can get clogged with moisture and dirt, restricting airflow and reducing efficiency. Make sure to regularly inspect and clean, or replace the air filter (if necessary) to avoid issues. If you've been riding through waterlogged streets, it's wise to get the engine oil checked, as water can sometimes mix with it, leading to a loss of lubrication and potential damage.
Where you park your bike during the monsoon is just as important as how you maintain it. If possible, always park your bike in a covered area, like a shed or an underground parking lot, to shield it from direct rainfall.
