KTM has revealed its new high-performance supersport, the 990 RC R, which it calls a machine that truly ‘offers the best of both domains.’ The bike combines track-focused engineering with everyday street usability. It marks Austrian bikemaker’s return to building powerful sport bikes that are not just race-ready, but also street-legal. In addition, the 990 RC R is a real treat for fans of the track-only RC 8C. While not a direct successor, the new supersport bike retains the aggressive spirit of the RC 8C but adds the crucial element of road legality.
While KTM’s prominent design ethos clearly shines through the 990 RC R, the bike is built on the proven 990 Duke platform. From its looks, you can tell it’s a true KTM, with aggressive styling and a sharp vibe throughout. The RC R has a full fairing (with integrated winglets), a sharp front cowl, a sculpted fuel tank (optimised for a racing tuck), and a tall tail section inspired by Moto2 prototypes. It lets riders adjust the footpegs and levers for a comfortable fit. Read on for more details.

The 990 RC R has been engineered using MotoGP aerodynamic expertise and years of R&D. It features a steel frame and aluminium subframe. For power, the KTM 990 RC R uses the same 947cc LC8c parallel-twin engine that is used in the current 990 Duke. However, the Austrian automaker has heavily re-tuned it for supersport duties. The unit, compliant with EURO5+ standards, produces a power output of 128bhp (more than the 990 Duke) and a peak torque of 103Nm. It comes paired with a six-speed gearbox.

Enhancements to the ECU mapping and exhaust setup have sharpened the RC R’s throttle response and boosted its high-rev performance.

KTM’s 990 RC R is equipped with a stiff trellis frame, top-of-the-line WP APEX suspension, and Brembo HyPure brakes. It has an extensive electronics suite, including a large 8.8-inch TFT display, a 6-axis IMU, advanced traction control, and multiple ABS and ride modes, with a Track Pack unlocking launch control, lap timer, and more.
The KTM 990 RC R will enter production this month and is expected to arrive in India following the global rollout. In terms of market competition, the bike will compete against several middleweight machines like the Ducati Panigale V2 and Kawasaki ZX-6R.

KTM has also announced a track-spec version, which will go on sale globally in February 2026. The track-only model will feature race-specific components, including direct brake lines, no ABS unit, a minimal dash, custom electronics, and a circuit-ready gearbox. More details will be revealed closer to launch.
