Mercedes-Benz is preparing to bring back the G-Class convertible to the global market after more than ten years, and the first official images of it in a prototype form are now officially out. The new G-Class Cabriolet has started its early testing phase in Austria as engineers collect detailed performance data to ensure it offers a true G-Class feel, even with the roof down. Mercedes confirms that the prototype will also undergo rigorous cold-weather testing. To jog your memory, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class Convertible was teased in September, suggesting familiar styling cues. The biggest update, however, is the switch from a conventional hard top to a retractable soft-top roof.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class Cabriolet: Here's What You Can Expect

The prototype images suggest that the upcoming model stays true to the G-Class’s iconic, boxy silhouette. Signature elements such as the slab-sided doors with protective bars, the flat bonnet, upright proportions, and pronounced wheel arches all appear to be intact. Like the earlier G-Class Cabriolet, the new version will also use a folding soft-top roof. That said, it will set itself apart from its predecessor with a more practical four-door layout instead of the former two-door design.

Mercedes-Benz hasn’t revealed any details about the powertrain yet, though the presence of a rear differential strongly hints at a combustion-powered variant. The open-top may also offer an electric version using the G580’s EQ architecture.

The Cabriolet is also likely to continue to carry the robust off-road components that give the G-Class its legendary capability.

Currently, there is no official launch date for the G-Class Cabriolet, but industry reports and the latest prototype images suggest a European debut sometime in the summer.
