TVS XL100

TVS Motor has filed applications for two new trademarks, E-XL and XL EV. The all-electric XL is expected to use both of these trademarks. The buzz around the electrified XL started gaining momentum in July last year when a patent photo of the e-moped appeared online. It is now official that the Hosur-based company is developing an XL battery-operated model that will compete against the recently launched Kinetic e-Luna. The manufacturer hasn't, however, officially released any information about the EV. Nevertheless, some important details regarding the upcoming moped model may be found in the XL Electric patent image that was leaked several months back.

TVS XL EV: Key Details

The leaked image revealed that, despite some minor but noticeable aesthetic changes, the XL Electric shares a familiar overall design with its fuel-powered sibling. Moreover, the same tubular central spine chassis—which includes a round headlight, split seats, fork guards, a tubular grab rail, and a few body panels—has been used for the development of the electric moped. The telescopic front forks, twin rear shock absorbers, front and rear drum brakes, and wire-spoke wheels are all part of the hardware that is comparable to the standard XL. The fuel tank is located in the front portion of the frame on the XL100, but not on the electric version.

The location of the motor and battery was also visible in the patent image. The battery pack, which powers a hub motor using a belt drive system, is positioned beneath the central tunnel. The XL Electric's lack of pedals is another significant difference from the petrol-driven XL100. Although the XL electric's powertrain is unknown, based on the patent illustration, it is anticipated to be driven by a motor installed on the swingarm and connected to the wheel by a belt drive. The pricing will probably be more than that of the current XL100.

TVS XL: Variants, Power Figures, Features and More

The XL100 has been on sale in India for more than 40 years; during that time, the model has changed to incorporate more contemporary engines and technology while maintaining its workhorse status. It sports wire-spoke wheels with 110mm drum brakes on each end. Furthermore, despite only weighing 89 kg, the moped can support a load of up to 130 kg.

The petrol-powered version is currently available from TVS in five different configurations: Comfort, Heavy Duty, Comfort i-Touch, Heavy Duty i-Touch, and Win Edition. It comes equipped with a 99.7cc single-cylinder engine that generates 6.5Nm of peak torque at 3,500rpm and 4.3bhp of maximum power at 6,000 rpm. In terms of features, it packs an electric start, an engine kill function, USB charging, and LED DRLs. The ex-showroom price of the model starts at Rs 45,000.

TVS Motor February 2024 Sales Figures

TVS reported a 34 per cent increase in total sales in February 2024. The Chennai-based company sold 3.56 lakh two-wheelers this month, compared to 2.67 lakh units in February 2023. Of these total two-wheelers, about 2.68 lakh units were given out to domestic owners, with the remaining 90,308 being exported to other parts of the world. As a result, the firm's local two-wheeler sales increased by 21 per cent from around 2.21 lakh units sold in February 2023.

The bikemaker's cumulative sales (two-wheelers + three-wheelers) last month reached over 3.68 lakh units, marking a 33 per cent increase over the 2.76 lakh units delivered in the same month in 2023. In February 2024, about 1.85 lakh motorcycles were sold, up from 1.26 lakh units in February 2023, representing a 46 per cent jump. Scooters, on the other hand, saw a 26 per cent spike in sales, rising from 1.05 lakh units in February last year to 1.32 lakh units last month.
