Yamaha has showcased the Proto Electric Superbike, also known as the Proto BEV, at the Japan Mobility Show 2025. The prototype reflects the manufacturer’s R-series heritage through its aerodynamic form and compact fairing structure. As a purpose-built concept, it excludes road-legal fittings such as mirrors or lighting units.
Yamaha positions the Proto BEV as a developmental platform to demonstrate progress in electric performance engineering rather than as a product intended for commercial production. Yamaha has not revealed the Proto BEV’s output, range, or battery capacity, keeping most specifications under wraps. However, the performance intent reportedly sits between the YZF-R6 and flagship YZF-R1.

The chassis follows Yamaha’s handling approach and uses materials that maintain balance and strength. It features upside-down front forks with a low-mounted rear monoshock to maintain even weight distribution. Braking is handled by dual discs at the front and a single disc at the rear, matching Yamaha’s current sport models. The setup supports a controlled riding stance for track conditions.
Technology on the Proto BEV includes a simplified Human-Machine Interface for clear communication between rider and system. Fingertip controls and a visual-audio display share operational data. The rear brake is operated by the left-hand lever instead of a foot pedal, bringing control inputs to one area. This configuration represents Yamaha’s study of improved ergonomics for electric motorcycles and refined mechanical systems for track operation.

The exterior continues Yamaha’s supersport design language, taking cues from the YZF-R series. The Proto BEV shows how an electric system can function with mechanical balance and consistent power delivery. It forms part of Yamaha’s larger electrification plan, which also includes hybrid and hydrogen-based projects.
