Budget-friendly Electric Cars in India Under Rs 15 Lakh: Tata Punch.ev, MG Comet, and More

With numerous options available on the market, choosing an electric car in India that fits your budget can be quite challenging. EVs are becoming increasingly popular because they have low running costs and are environmentally friendly. These vehicles come in nearly every body style – from hatchbacks to SUVs. Here are some reasonably priced electric cars in India from reputable automakers like Tata Motors and Citroen. Let's take a brief look at these vehicles in more detail. 

Tata Punch.ev

The electrified Punch is one of the most affordable EVs available in India, with prices ranging between 10.99 lakh and Rs 15.49 lakh (ex-showroom). It comes in five variants: Smart, Smart +, Adventure, Empowered, and Empowered+.

The electric SUV is equipped with multiple features, such as two 10.25-inch screens for infotainment and navigation, ventilated front seats, a 360-degree camera, a two-spoke steering wheel featuring an illuminated Tata logo, an optional electric sunroof, a jewelled rotary drive selector (exclusive to LR variants), an electronic parking brake with auto-hold functionality, connected car technology, automatic climate control, cruise control, a wireless charger, and an air purifier.

There are two mechanical versions of the Tata Punch.ev – Medium Range (MR) and Long Range (LR). The former has a 25kWh battery with a range of 315 kilometres (MIDC), while the latter gets a larger 35kWh battery with an MIDC range of 421 kilometres on a single charge.

In India, the Citroen eC3 hatchback offers an elegant yet reasonably priced EV solution. The electric version of the C3 retails between Rs 12.76 lakh and Rs 13.41 lakh (ex-showroom). It has an electric motor installed on the front axle, which is powered by a 29.2kWh battery pack. With a peak torque of 143Nm and 56bhp, the motor can reach a top speed of 107km/h. Moreover, the EV can do the 0 to 60km/h sprint in a time of 6.8 seconds.

With two driving modes (Eco and Standard) and regenerative braking, the Citroen eC3 boasts an ARAI-claimed range of 320 kilometres. It is equipped with a manual air conditioner, a semi-digital instrument panel, dual front airbags, ABS with EBD, and rear parking sensors.

Tata Tiago EV

The Tiago EV is another popular hatchback on the list of budget-friendly electric vehicles. It is offered in multiple variants (XE, XT, XZ+, and XZ+ Tech Lux) and five exterior colours. The cost of the Tata Tiago EV ranges from Rs 7.99 lakh to Rs 11.89 lakh (ex-showroom). 

The Tiago EV is packed with numerous features, including a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, electric ORVMs with auto fold, rain-sensing wipers, a 4-speaker Harman sound system with four tweeters, cruise control, auto headlamps, steering-mounted controls, and dual front airbags. In terms of battery specs, the electrified Tiago offers two options: a 19.2kWh unit and a 24kWh unit. The smaller battery produces 110Nm and 60bhp, whereas the larger unit generates 114Nm and 73bhp.

The higher-spec models feature the larger battery, offering a 315-kilometre MIDC range. The entry-level models, on the other hand, are powered by the smaller one and offer a MIDC range of 250 kilometres.

For those who prefer compact cars, the MG Comet may be the best option in the electric segment. Its compact hatchback design and fast charging technology make it a good value-for-money offering. In India, the MG car costs between Rs 6.99 lakh and Rs 9.24 lakh (ex-showroom pan India). It has three different variants (Executive, Excite, and Exclusive) and is available in three monotones and two dual-tone colour options.

With a single motor mounted on the back axle and a 17.3kWh battery, the Comet can produce up to 110Nm of maximum torque and 41bhp of peak power. It now has a new 7.4kW AC fast-charging option, which can charge the vehicle in less than 3.5 hours, compared to seven hours taken by the old charger. However, it is essential to keep in mind that only the Excite and the Exclusive editions offer the fast charging option.
