BYD’s YangWang U9 Xtreme EV has become the first electric vehicle to complete a lap of the Nurburgring Nordschleife in under seven minutes. Covering the 20.832km circuit in 6 minutes 59.157 seconds, the U9 Xtreme now holds the record as the fastest electric production sports car at the German track. The achievement is the result of months of testing and development, combining advanced engineering with professional racing expertise to extract maximum performance from the hypercar. Before its Nurburgring record, the U9 Xtreme had recorded a top speed of 496.22km/h on a German test track earlier in 2025, establishing itself as one of the fastest production electric vehicles worldwide.

The record lap was set by professional racer Moritz Kranz in August 2025. Kranz, with extensive experience in GT racing, worked closely with BYD’s engineering team to prepare the car for the circuit’s mix of fast straights, sharp corners, and elevation changes. Development of the U9 Xtreme began in mid-2024 and involved multiple simulations and track tests aimed at optimising performance for the demanding layout of the Nurburgring.
The U9 Xtreme uses four electric motors that together produce about 2,959bhp and power all four wheels. Its 1,200-volt electrical system ensures rapid power delivery and consistent acceleration. The car also features an adaptive suspension system that continuously adjusts to the track's conditions, maintaining control in every section of the circuit. These technologies combined enabled the U9 Xtreme to achieve its record time.

The sub-seven-minute lap and nearly 500km/h top speed show the strong performance potential of electric hypercars. BYD intends to produce only about 30 units of the U9 Xtreme. Despite the limited run, Nurburgring regulations classify it as a production car, giving official status to the record.
