23 per cent more downforce than the original FXX-K and 100 per cent more madness - that's Ferrari's new FXX-K Evo summed up!

Say hello the new Ferrari FXX-K Evo – a limited run and utterly bonkers track-bred hypercar. The Ferrari aficionados among you will recall that the FXX-K was launched last year and it was a track-only version of the already mad LaFerrari hybrid supercar. Now, though, Ferrari has realised that the FXX-K’s downforce wasn’t just enough, so, what they’ve done over the past year is ‘evolve’ the aero package of the hypercar. And the end result of that is the FXX-K Evo.

Evo versions aren’t new to the Ferrari range – it has already been done with the FXX and 599 XX before. And just like these two, the Evo version of the FXX-K also benefits from an extensive package that applies innovative concepts derived from Formula 1, GT3, GTE and Challenge racing, says Ferrari.

According to Ferrari, the FXX-K Evo’s downforce coefficient is improved by 23% over the ‘standard’ FXX-K. This also means that it’s increased by 75% over the road-going LaFerrari! In numbers, a downforce of 640kg is generated at 200km/h now. And it’ll exceed 830kg when the car is driven at ‘red-line speed’.

How’s all that achieved? Well, it’s quite complicated to understand it in one go, but here’s how Ferrari explains it:

“The FXX-K Evo’s downforce level is boosted by a twin-profile fixed wing on the tail. The twin-profile rear wing is supported by two side fins as well as by a central fin. The latter plays a dual role - firstly it acts as a vertical fin, boosting stability at low yaw angles, and secondly, it supports the action of the three delta (triangular) vortex generators. The vortex generators, on the one hand, clean the flow field striking the wing of the effects of the wake of the hot air flow from the radiators which vents onto the bonnet. On the other, they create a downwash component in the flow which boosts the twin-profile’s downforce capacity. The design of the rear bumpers was also modified in the light of the new flow structures.”

In addition to that, the front bumpers, the front brake air intakes and the whole suspension setup has been revised to match the improved aerodynamics. Inside, the FXX-K Evo gets a Formula 1 derived steering wheel with integrated gear-shifting paddles and KERS Manettino controls. The drivetrain remains unchanged, meaning it's still propelled by a 1,036bhp 6.3-litre V12 hybrid powertrain, sending the drive to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The new FXX-K Evo will be available exclusively as an upgrade package for the existing XX car owners, meaning it’ll be built in very, very limited numbers. The first FXX-K Evo cars will roll out during the XX Programme in the 2018/2019.
