Hyundai has finally unveiled its new off-road concept called the Crater at the ongoing LA Auto Show. Looking at the concept, we can clearly see that the Korean automaker is here to pursue its off-road ambitions and introduce a more aggressive design direction for its XRT lineup available overseas. Hyundai says the concept’s design draws from its Art of Steel philosophy, turning steel’s strength and flexibility into sculptural form. The overall stance is robust, with sharp body lines, and the adventure-ready spirit oozes from every element, be it a wide and functional skid plate underneath or 33-inch off-road tyres.
Four roof-mounted driving lights provide better visibility for off-road adventures, emphasising its rugged purpose. While the Crater is just a concept, and Hyundai presents it as an answer to the question, 'What does freedom look like?'. The SUV embodies a vision driven by the spirit of exploration. We believe that the Crater will, in some way, influence the design of upcoming Hyundai off-roaders, including the one intended for India, although nothing has been confirmed yet.

The Crater features a compact monocoque architecture, which adds to its versatile, go-anywhere proportions. The bold silhouette is complemented by steep approach and departure angles, and wide, sheer fenders, reflecting Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ philosophy.

The Crater Concept rides on 18-inch hexagonal wheels, wrapped in 33-inch off-road tyres. It comes with several functional design elements, such as a wide skid plate, rocker panels, and limb risers. Other highlights include built-in recovery hooks that double as bottle openers, removable side-mirror cameras, parametric pixel, and an indirect three-dimensional lighting setup.

The Concept’s interior is a mix of rugged utility and modern style. The bent-metal-inspired crash pad, ambient lighting, and strap-like design elements add visual depth while creating a warm, and inviting cabin setup. Meanwhile, durable surfaces, wraparound, supportive seats with four-point harnesses, integrated grab handles, and practical accessories like a first-aid kit and removable speaker reinforce safety and utility.
