The competition in India’s premium MPV segment is about to get more intense with the launch of the Kia Carens Clavis. The model will take on the likes of strong contenders such as the Maruti Suzuki XL6, Toyota Rumion, and even its own sibling, the Carens. It will be positioned above the Carens in Kia’s lineup and features noticeable upgrades in both design and equipment. Considering growing options in the segment, we pit the all-new Kia Carens Clavis against the well-established Maruti Suzuki XL6 to find out which MPV delivers better value across key areas like design, features, and performance.
The Kia Carens Clavis takes the lead in variety and performance. It shares its powertrain lineup with the Carens, offering three engine options — a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol, a punchy 1.5-litre turbo-petrol, and a fuel-efficient 1.5-litre diesel. Power outputs range from 113bhp to 158bhp, giving buyers a wide performance spectrum.

The Clavis also impresses with its transmission choices, including a 6-speed manual, iMT, 7-speed DCT, and a torque converter automatic. Notably, the turbo-petrol now gets a 6-speed manual too. In contrast, the Maruti Suzuki XL6 keeps it simpler with a single 1.5-litre petrol engine producing 102bhp, available with either a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic.
While the XL6 offers a practical factory-fitted CNG option for better fuel savings, its performance drops to 87bhp, and it’s limited to a manual transmission. In terms of sheer flexibility and excitement behind the wheel, the Clavis has the clear edge, while the XL6 caters more to those prioritising running costs and simplicity.
The Kia Carens Clavis outpaces the Maruti Suzuki XL6 in the premium MPV segment by offering more advanced and feature-rich equipment, including larger screens, superior safety tech (level-2 ADAS), and conveniences like tray tables and a power-folding second row.
The Clavis caters to buyers seeking a higher level of technology and premium feel, while the XL6 focuses on practicality and affordability. It comes with a 6-speaker sound system, a 7-inch touchscreen with wireless Android Auto/ Apple CarPlay, a 360-degree Camera, among other features.
When it comes to MPVs, size undeniably matters, and the Kia Carens Clavis delivers. The Kia car measures 4,550mm in length—105mm more than the XL6. It has a width of 1,800mm, which results in slightly more shoulder room.

The upcoming Kia car also has a longer wheelbase of 2,780mm, which adds to more legroom, particularly in the rear rows. On the contrary, the XL6 is taller at 1,755mm compared to the Clavis's 1,708mm (with roof rails). This added height may provide a slightly airier feel inside.
That said, the Clavis offers more spacious proportions and a stronger road presence, while the XL6 remains a great option for those who prefer a taller, more compact MPV.
The Kia Carens Clavis is expected to start around Rs 11 lakh (ex-showroom), with official pricing due on May 23. While its base price might mirror the Maruti Suzuki XL6's, the Clavis's higher variants are likely to be priced at a premium, exceeding the XL6's Rs 11.84 lakh to Rs 14.87 lakh range. This price difference is anticipated to reflect the Clavis's enhanced features.
