Mahindra launches new S9 variant for the Scorpio that packs in a lot of features from the range topping S11 variant.

At a time when the Hyundai Creta is hogging the limelight in the mid-size crossover / SUV segment, Mahindra has introduced a new S9 variant for its Scorpio to make the rugged Scorpio more appealing to buyers who aren’t aiming for the top-end variant. The new S9 variant is slotted below the top-end S11 variant, and as its nomenclature suggests, it is listed above the S7 variant on the price list. As you can understand its purpose, the S9 bridges the gap between the S7 and S11 variant of the car by offering a lot of equipment from the top-end version. At the same time, it does shy away from the top-end variant in the form of some trim materials and a few features.

To keep things simple, here’s a look at what the S9 packs in terms of feature highlights and what it misses out on.

In terms of what it gets, the Mahindra Scorpio S9 comes fitted with static bending projector headlamps, the same 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system as the S11 complete with sat-nav, steering mounted audio controls, climate control, electrically adjustable ORVMs with integrated side indicators, cruised control, ABS, front airbags, tilt adjustable steering wheel, rear wiper and defogger and hydraulic bonnet struts.

What the S9 misses out on in comparison to the S11 is faux leather seat upholstery and steering wrap, reverse camera, alloy wheels, tyre pressure monitoring system, automatic headlamps and wipers. The S9 gets silver inserts around on the front grille and rear license plate garnish as opposed to chrome on the S11 variant. The front fog lamps also do not get chrome surrounds in the S9.

Speaking on the introduction of the S9 variant of the Scorpio, Veejay Ram Nakra, Chief of Sales and Marketing - Automotive Division, Mahindra, said, “Scorpio changed the landscape of the Indian Auto Industry & continues to be a dominant force in the SUV segment. The new Scorpio S9 offers a great feature package at an attractive price point making it a compelling buy for customers looking for a true-blue SUV, while retaining Scorpio’s core DNA of Power, Driving Thrill & Adventure.”

The Scorpio S9 is only available as a 2WD model and is priced at Rs. 13.99 lakh while the S11 2WD is priced at Rs. 15.14 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The S9 is mechanically identical to the S11 2WD with its 2.2 litre turbodiesel generating 140bhp of max power and 320Nm of peak torque.
