Mahindra Thar 4x4 Base Variant Coming Soon in India?

Mahindra & Mahindra will reportedly launch the new 4x4 base model of the Thar in the country. It will be positioned below the AX(O) version in the vehicle's lineup. Further, it will likely miss out on some features found in the AX (O) trim.

Mahindra & Mahindra is expected to introduce a new entry-level 4x4 model of the Thar in India. Reportedly, the new variant will sit below the AX(O) version. In terms of popularity, the Mahindra Thar, according to reports, has been ahead of its different competitors ever since its launch in 2020. Thanks to frequent updates, the vehicle has been constantly in the headlines for its increasing reach in the country. Currently, the Mahindra Thar is available in - AX(O) and LX trim options. Right now, the Force Gurkha is the only direct opponent of the Thar in the country. However, the SUV will soon witness the threat in the market with the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny. Reportedly, Mahindra is gearing up to introduce the new variant in the Thar lineup to maintain sales growth amidst the launch of the new Jimny in India. Here are further details on the new variant that Mahindra will presumably introduce in the Thar's lineup.

Mahindra Thar 4x4 Base Variant: Engine 

There is no official confirmation but market speculations reveal that the base variant might be dubbed AX AC. Reports further indicate that features found in the AX (O) trim will be absent in the entry-level variant. It is speculated to be a four-seater with back seats that face forward. Coming to the engine, the new entry-level Thar 4x4 will reportedly come with a 2.0-litre, 4-cylinder mStallion petrol engine, capable of generating 150bhp and 320Nm, and a 2.2-litre mHawk diesel unit, capable of delivering 130bhp and 320Nm. A 6-speed manual transmission is anticipated to be paired with both engines.

Mahindra Thar: Mechanical & Other Details 

On the mechanical front, the Mahindra Thar is available with three engine options: 1.5-litre diesel, 2.2-litre diesel, 2.0-litre petrol engine. The base-spec 1.5-litre diesel unit produces 116bhp and 300Nm and comes with rear-wheel drive, mated to a 6-speed manual transmission. On the other hand, a 2.2-litre diesel engine generates 128bhp, and a 2.0-litre petrol engine, delivers 150bhp, both at 300Nm of torque value. For transmission, both of these engines use either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic gearbox. The petrol engine is offered in both 4WD and RWD variants, the diesel engine is only offered in the 4WD version. Mahindra Thar 4WD recently received two new colour options - Everest White and Blazing Bronze. These hues were exclusively offered for the 2WD version.

Mahindra Thar: Recent Updates 

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. announced that the new Thar has attained a production milestone of 1 lakh units in India. As mentioned, the Thar is available in RWD and 4x4 models in the country. According to the firm, the Thar has changed from being an extreme off-roader to a symbol of liberation, passion, and the pinnacle of lifestyle SUVs. Aside from this, the automaker will launch a 5-door Thar to compete with the Jimny 5-door in India. The 5-door Thar, presently undergoing testing, is anticipated to make its public appearance by the year's end.
