Audi has officially introduced the plug-in hybrid variants of the A5 series, now bearing the “e-hybrid” lettering. Built on the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), this debut expands the A5 lineup by incorporating electrified models alongside the traditional internal combustion engine versions. For the first time, Audi is offering two plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) options for the A5, each available with two powertrain configurations. Available in both sedan and Avant (estate) body styles, these PHEVs are engineered for enhanced efficiency and an extended electric range. The latest high-voltage battery technology delivers around 45% more capacity than before, while improved regenerative braking further optimises energy recuperation, enabling an all-electric driving range of up to 110 km.

The A5 e-hybrid models mirror the standard versions in terms of design, maintaining a sleek and familiar aesthetic. However, the more powerful A5 e-hybrid quattro variant sets itself apart with a sportier and more aggressive look. It comes standard with the S line exterior package, black styling package, and privacy glazing, enhancing its dynamic appeal.

The quattro version also continues to feature the black styling package and privacy glazing, further emphasising its bold and premium character.

New Audi A5 e-hybrid: Mechanical Specs and Charging Details

The Audi A5 plug-in hybrid will be introduced in two distinct performance variants, delivering either 295bhp or 362bhp in combined output. Both configurations feature a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine generating 248bhp, paired with a permanently excited synchronous electric motor that contributes up to 140bhp. This electric motor is seamlessly incorporated into the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, ensuring smooth power delivery. The more powerful version boasts 499Nm of torque, propelling the vehicle from 0 to 100km/h in 5.1 seconds, while the less potent variant, producing 449Nm of torque, achieves the same acceleration in 5.9 seconds. Regardless of output, both versions have an electronically limited top speed of 155km/h. Furthermore, the vehicle’s speed is capped at 87km/h in EV mode.

At the heart of the plug-in hybrid system lies an advanced high-voltage battery with approximately 45% more capacity than the previous PHEV setup in the Audi A6, despite only a marginal increase in physical dimensions. This improvement is due to a revised battery structure, where individual cells are directly bonded into the casing rather than being housed in separate modules, optimising energy density while maintaining a compact form. With a net capacity of 20.7kWh, the A5 e-hybrid offers a WLTP-rated electric driving range of up to 110 km, though EPA estimates would likely place the real-world figure closer to 92 km.

Charging capabilities have also been enhanced, with a maximum AC charging rate of 11 kW – an upgrade from the previous 7.4 kW – enabling a full charge in approximately 2.5 hours. Audi has also refined the regenerative braking system, allowing drivers to manually adjust energy recuperation via steering-mounted paddles or rely on automated optimisation based on navigation data and real-time traffic conditions. The A5 PHEV can be operated in two modes: "EV" for pure electric driving and "Hybrid" for a blend of gasoline and electric propulsion, with an option to reserve a specific amount of battery charge.
