Mercedes-Benz has offered a first preview of the updated S-Class ahead of its global debut scheduled for 29 January. The flagship sedan is expected to receive a mid-cycle update based on the current W223 platform. While the model has not been fully revealed yet, the preview suggests that Mercedes is preparing a wide set of revisions aimed at extending the lifecycle of the luxury sedan. Much like how a flagship car gets refined rather than rebuilt, this update is likely to focus on technology, comfort and digital upgrades.

The updated S-Class is set to retain its familiar silhouette and proportions. Visual changes are likely to be subtle, with revisions expected around the front fascia, grille design and lighting elements. The preview hints that Mercedes-Benz may bring back the traditional bonnet-mounted star, possibly with illumination, along with updated LED headlamps and tail lamps. New wheel designs and minor bumper revisions are also expected, helping differentiate the facelift from the current model without altering its overall road presence.

Inside the cabin, the biggest change is expected to come through the introduction of the new Mercedes-Benz Operating System, known as MB.OS. This in-house software platform is expected to manage infotainment, vehicle functions, connectivity features and over-the-air updates. The system is likely to allow more flexibility for future upgrades, making the cabin feel more up-to-date over time. Changes to switchgear and steering wheel controls are also expected, with a possible return to physical buttons for improved usability.

The updated S-Class is expected to continue with multiple powertrain options depending on the market. Petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants are likely to remain part of the range. The sedan is also expected to feature hardware capable of supporting higher levels of automated driving in regions where regulations permit, even if such features are activated at a later stage.
Mercedes-Benz is also expected to expand its Manufaktur personalisation programme, offering buyers a wider choice of exterior colours, interior trims and cabin finishes. Following the global debut on 29 January, regional launch timelines, variant details and pricing are expected to be announced in phases.
