Renault Triber Vs Datsun Go Plus

Renault's latest offering, the Triber compact MPV, aims to capture the imagination of younger car buyers in the country. We pitch it against its chief rival, the Datsun Go+, to see how it fares.

With the Triber, which, as per Renault, is a product specifically designed for the Indian market, the company wants to provide an unmatched value proposition to car buyers looking for an affordable yet premium B-segment vehicle. With attractive pricing & a long list of features & creature comforts, Renault is indeed on the right path in order to shake things up with the Triber. We find out if its chief rival has anything to be afraid of.

Dimensions

Well, both the Triber & Go+ are sub-4m people carriers with seating for seven on offer. While they both have near-identical overall length, the Triber is wider by 103mm, which translates into more comfortable three-abreast seating. Despite only a 5mm difference in length, the Triber trumps the Go+ as it features 186mm longer wheelbase. Therefore, expect the Triber to have a more spacious & comfortable cabin. With similar ground clearance as well, both the cars offer the same levels of urban environment practicality.

Drivetrain

While both cars are powered by three-cylinder petrol motors, the Go+ is powered by a bigger 1.2-litre motor, compared to the Triber's 1.0-litre power unit. At present, Renault has launched the Triber only with a five-speed manual gearbox. However, an AMT variant is likely to follow soon. The Go+, on the other hand, continues to be on sale with a five-speed manual only. The Triber will be able to achieve higher top speed, due to a 4bhp advantage over the Go+ but, the latter will be a tad more sprightly owing to higher torque output. Both cars remain closely matched in terms of their fuel economy as well.

Features & Equipment

This is where the Triber really shines through, mainly because of the fact that Renault has positioned the Triber as a more premium B-segment offering than its rivals. Thus, the features & equipment list on the Triber makes for a good read. The Go+, on the other hand, is a more functional offering, with a few basic features on offer. The Go+, however, misses out on some important bits like projector headlamps & AC vents for the middle/third row.

Price Range

The Go+ has a good advantage over the Triber here as its starting price is about ₹ 1.08 lakh lower than that of the Triber. So, if you're willing to skip out on some creature comforts and need a decent entry-level family-haulier, then the Go+ seems like a reasonable option. However, move up the range and you'll see that the top-spec versions of both the cars are separated by only about ₹ 55,000, due to which the top-end Triber offers really good value for money. For the extra 50k, the Triber offers a lot more equipment & creature comforts. Plus, the customisation options on offer with the Triber definitely make the car a lot more appealing to a younger generation of car buyers in India.

Datsun Go+₹ 3.87 lakh - ₹ 5.94 lakh
