A total of 47,235 vehicles from Skoda and Volkswagen have been recalled in India over a potential issue with the rear seatbelt system. This recall impacts several popular models, including the Skoda Kushaq, Slavia, and Kylaq, as well as the Volkswagen Virtus and Taigun. Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) confirms that all affected cars were produced between May 24, 2024, and April 1, 2025. Of the recalled units, 25,722 are from Skoda’s lineup, while 21,513 belong to Volkswagen. Here’s everything you need to know.
Volkswagen and Skoda's quality inspections discovered a potential safety flaw in rear seatbelts. If a frontal collision occurs, the rear seatbelts in affected vehicles may not perform as intended. Specifically, the buckle latch could fracture, the webbing of the rear centre seatbelt assembly and right rear seatbelts might fail. With this compromised functionality, rear occupants would be at a significantly higher risk of injury due to insufficient restraint during the impact.
The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) has listed the recall details, while official guidance from Skoda and Volkswagen is still pending. The carmakers are likely to provide a step-by-step process for getting the defective seatbelt components inspected and replaced.

While there is no official word yet on whether it is safe to continue driving the affected vehicles, the defect specifically concerns the safety of rear-seat passengers. Until the issue is resolved, it's advisable to avoid using the rear seats. Owners of vehicles produced within the affected timeframe should act swiftly and arrange for the necessary service to address this potential safety hazard.
