Here’s how the newly unveiled Tata Sierra sets itself apart from the iconic 90s model, showcasing the evolution in design.

The new Tata Sierra made a grand debut at the Auto Expo in its near-production Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) form. The modern SUV draws inspiration from the iconic 90s model and is far from just a nostalgic throwback. With over three decades since the original Sierra first hit the roads in 1991, the legendary SUV still holds a special place in Indian automotive history. Here's a head-to-head comparison between the newly revealed Tata Sierra and its legendary predecessor, exploring the evolution of design, technology, and performance.

The new Sierra retains classic elements like the curved rear windows and bold wheel arches while introducing a sharper roofline, a more upright stance, and shorter overhangs. This design approach creates a striking silhouette that's both familiar and distinctly modern.
The old Sierra’s rectangular halogen headlights and grille have undergone a striking transformation in the new model. The updated grille now features a shiny black trim, integrated with connected LED DRLs, the Sierra lettering, and the Tata emblem. The black-finished sleek air intake channels and sharp LED headlights further enhance the look.

The SUV has a contemporary design with vertically-stacked LED fog lamps and a body-coloured bumper featuring a gloss black lower section and a silver skid plate. It replaces the original flap-type handles and two doors with flush-door handles and four doors for enhanced practicality.
The new Sierra features 19-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 195/65 R19 tyres, which gives it a sportier stance compared to the predecessor's thick, high-profile 215/75 R15 tyres. It does not include the roof rails and the extensive black plastic cladding of the original model for a more streamlined appearance. At the rear, the original Sierra’s tailgate-mounted spare wheel and halogen taillights are swapped for a more upright tailgate, integrated LED light bar, roof-mounted spoiler, and a 'Sierra' lettering, giving the new model a refined appearance.
While there is no official confirmation, the upcoming Sierra is expected to offer a technologically advanced interior, including three 12.3-inch screens, ambient lighting, a four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, and the option of 4- and 5-seat configurations. In contrast, the original Sierra’s cabin was more basic, with a 5-seat setup, and a folding rear bench.
Following the trend of current Tata cars and SUVs, the new Sierra will likely offer electric, petrol, and diesel powertrain options. The SUV’s ICE version is expected to offer a choice between a 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine (168bhp/250Nm) and a 2.0-litre diesel engine (168bhp/350Nm).

Notably, the old model was initially available with a naturally aspirated diesel engine. However, it later gained a more powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre diesel unit, delivering 89.7bhp and 186Nm. It came standard with a 5-speed manual transmission (standard), and a 4x4 option.
