The testing system gauges how well a car protects its occupants in crashes and gives it a safety rating out of five stars. Here are the top 5 Bharat NCAP-rated cars in India under Rs 20 lakh.
The new-gen Dzire, priced between Rs 6.84 lakh and Rs 10.19 lakh (both, ex-showroom), is one of the safest cars on the list a Bharat NCAP safety rating of 5 stars. The sedan scored 29.46 out of 32 points for adult occupant safety and 41.57 out of 49 points for child occupant protection. It is equipped with a range of safety features, including ISOFIX child-seat mounts, a 360-degree camera, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), six airbags (standard), and three-point seatbelts for all five passengers.

The new Dzire has a 1.2-litre Z Series petrol engine that produces a maximum power output of 80bhp and a peak torque of 112Nm and is paired with either a five-speed manual or an AMT transmission.

The Tata Nexon could be your perfect choice if you are looking to buy a compact SUV in India with strong safety credentials. It is offered in both ICE and electric forms. The Nexon ICE received 29.41 points out of 32 for Adult Occupant Protection, and 43.83 out of 49 for Child Occupant Protection. Its electric counterpart, on the other hand, earned 29.86/32 points for AOP and 44.95/49 points for COP. The Nexon EV is offered with two battery pack options (30kWh and 45kWh), while the ICE variant can be had with either a 1.5-litre diesel or a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol unit. The Nexon ICE is priced at Rs 8 lakh, while the EV costs Rs 12.49 lakh. These are starting and ex-showroom prices.

The Syros underwent testing by Bharat NCAP in April this year. The sub-4m SUV scored 30.21 out of 32 for adult occupant protection and 44.42 out of 49 for child occupant protection. It is available with two engine options: a 118bhp/172Nm 1.0-litre turbo-petrol (7-speed DCT optional) and a 114bhp/250Nm 1.5-litre diesel (6-speed torque converter optional). A 6-speed manual is standard on both. In terms of safety, the Kia SUV has six airbags (standard), ISOFIX child seat anchorages, front, side, and rear parking sensors, and a level-2 ADAS. It is priced between Rs 9 lakh and Rs 17.80 lakh (ex-showroom).

The Tata Curvv and Curvv EV have both excelled in the BNCAP. The ICE-powered Coupe SUV scored 29.50/32 points for AOP and 43.66/49 points for COP. The Curvv EV, on the other hand, earned 30.81/32 and 44.83/49 points for AOP and COP, respectively. Notable safety features include six airbags, ADAS, ESC, and ABS with EBD. The Curvv ICE offers three engine choices: a 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol (Hyperion), a 1.2-litre turbo-petrol (Revotron), and a 1.5-litre diesel. The Curvv EV has a liquid-cooled Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor and two battery options (45kWh and 55kWh). The Curvv is priced between Rs 10 lakh and Rs 19.52 lakh, while the EV starts at Rs 17.49 lakh and goes up to Rs 22.24 lakh. These are ex-showroom prices.

The BE 6 from Mahindra also scored a 5-star safety rating in the Bharat NCAP crash tests. The EV scored 31.97 points out of 32 in adult occupant protection and 45 out of 49 points in child occupant protection.

The BEV boasts two LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery options: 59kWh and 79kWh. It has seven airbags, a 360-degree camera, and Level-2 ADAS. The e-SUV starts at Rs 18.90 lakh. However, the top variant fetches around Rs 26.90 lakh (both, ex-showroom).
