The ongoing CES 2026 (Consumer Electronics Show) has seen the long-standing vision of production-ready solid-state battery technology come to fruition. Finland-based technology company Donut Lab has taken the wraps off the high-performance solid-state batteries, which will be integrated into all 2026 Verge Motorcycles, set to launch in Q1. The race to replace lithium-ion batteries has long been a challenging one. However, the most recent development in the future of SSBs at CES 2026 marks a pivotal moment in shaping the EV industry. Compared to the current lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, the solid-state batteries offer higher energy density, faster charging, improved safety, and a longer lifespan. While they are more expensive and harder to mass-produce, the SSBs have the potential to significantly lower EV costs over the long term, and increase their adoption by reducing range anxiety and unlocking higher performance.
Currently, the world’s first solid-state batteries have made their debut on the global stage. While it remains unclear when the technology will reach the Indian market, here’s a closer look at Donut Lab’ solid-state battery technology and what sets it apart.
The Donut Lab solid-state battery claims to charge fully in five minutes, support repeated full discharges, and last up to 100,000 cycles without major capacity loss. It does not use flammable liquids, so there’s no risk of fire. Moreover, it avoids metallic dendrites and thermal runaway, two common causes of battery failures. The battery is made from materials that are abundant, affordable, and easy to source, keeping costs lower and supply chains more stable.
Donut Lab asserts that the battery's design is highly flexible, making it suitable for custom production in a variety of sizes, shapes, and voltages, as well as being employed in different applications, including motorcycles, and drones other high-tech devices.

The all-solid-state battery from Donut Lab is now in production and powering Verge Motorcycles, making them the first production vehicles to feature this technology. The bikes can charge in under 10 minutes, adding up to 60 kilometres of range per minute, while the long-range model delivers 600 kilometres on a single charge. Verge Motorcycles are now available for order, with first deliveries set for Q1 2026.
