The much-anticipated merger between Nissan and Honda seems to be on the brink of falling apart. Reports suggest that Nissan has pulled out of the $60 billion deal just over a month after the two companies began discussions. While neither automaker has officially confirmed the move, the development raises questions about the future of both Japanese brands.

Notably, the strategic merger was intended to strengthen the positions of the Japanese giants in the competitive automotive industry. It aimed to enhance market presence and increase the ability to innovate and respond to the challenges of a rapidly changing market. The merger also focused on optimising manufacturing plants, service networks, and supply chains, while integrating back-office operations for greater efficiency.

Possible Factors Behind the Fallout

According to a report from Reuters, Nissan's CEO, Makoto Uchida, told Honda’s CEO, Toshihiro Mibe, on Thursday that he wanted to halt the merger talks, following Honda’s suggestion to make Nissan a subsidiary. While official confirmation is yet to be made, the revised proposal from Honda represents a significant departure from the initial strategy of partnership. Following the fallout with Honda, the report highlights that Nissan is now actively pursuing fresh alliances, particularly with tech companies. Although there is no confirmation, speculations are rife that Nissan may be exploring a partnership with Foxconn, the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer based in Taiwan.

Foxconn, renowned for manufacturing Apple’s iPhones, has been actively expanding its footprint in the electric vehicle (EV) sector. In December, Reuters reported that Foxconn reached out to Nissan with a proposal, though the automaker ultimately turned it down. However, if Nissan now reconsiders and moves forward with a partnership, it could provide the Japanese carmaker with a crucial financial boost.  On the other hand, the partnership could help Foxconn establish a more robust presence in the rapidly growing electric vehicle market.
