After announcing a Rs 3,000 crore plan for EVs, absorbing Mahindra Electric into Mahindra Automotive, and completely acquiring Meru Cabs, Mahindra has announced yet another move that is likely to make it a strong contender in the automotive business.

Mahindra has announced that the company will set up its dedicated Mahindra Advanced Design Europe – M.A.D.E in short – centre in the United Kingdom – in Coventry, West Midlands, to be precise. The facility will be fully operational by July 1, 2021.

Mahindra also has a design studio in Mumbai and Pininfarina Design in Turin, Italy. And the new design centre will be an addition to its global network of design centres. M.A.D.E is expected to play a key role in Mahindra’s vehicle development and help the manufacturer in exhibiting the potentials of its products through design.

The design studio will have verticals for colours, materials, and finish. Separate departments will be responsible for these aforementioned design elements that one experiences in a vehicle. The efforts and learnings of M.A.D.E will benefit Mahindra Farm vehicles and Mahindra Two-wheelers, in addition to the range of electric vehicles and commercial cars/SUV Mahindra has in the pipeline for the next few years.

Mahindra also says that the design studio has been strategically placed to absorb the right talent required for the job from Coventry, which is the design hub for automobiles. Tata Motors has its design centre in the same region, which is currently lead by Martin Uhlarik, who was recently appointed as the design head after Pratap Bose parted ways with the company.
