New Volkswagen EV

Volkswagen CEO Thomas Schäfer recently revealed that the company will unveil a new entry-level electric car concept in March 2025. Priced around €20,000 (approximately ₹18 lakh), the new model won't be available globally until 2027. Expected to be named the ID.1, this electric vehicle will replace the current Volkswagen Up city car and will be part of VW’s growing ID. family, which includes models like the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7, ID.7 Tourer, and ID.Buzz.

Before the ID.1 hits the market, Volkswagen will introduce the ID.2all in 2026, its first small electric car, priced from €25,000. Built on the new MEB platform, the ID.2all will set the stage for future electric models. These moves reflect Volkswagen’s strategy to provide affordable, sustainable electric mobility and significantly expand its electric vehicle portfolio in the coming years.

Cavallo, Chairperson of the General and Group Works Council of Volkswagen AG, emphasized: 'As the heart of the Group, Wolfsburg will face crucial tasks which we intend to tackle with determination. Technical Development will be performing pioneering work for all the other passenger car brands with the SSP platform, which will be used throughout the Group. This lever will be just as important for our future success as our platform strategy for our current ICE models.

‘At our main plant, we will not only be working on development but also producing strongly over the next few years. The future electric flagships – the Golf and the T-Roc produced in Wolfsburg – currently represent a volume in excess of 500,000 units per year. The main plant has therefore secured a highly attractive vehicle segment and will be continuing the tradition of the Golf from Wolfsburg, which has a history of more than 50 years. It will now be crucial to work consistently on the preparations required for success in the years to come.

‘The Board of Management will need to deliver and to set a new course in terms of complexity, work procedures and synergy effects. The Works Council and top management will cooperate closely on these developments. Our cooperation will include a joint progress meeting every quarter.'

More About New Volkswagen EV

Volkswagen's upcoming entry-level electric vehicle will feature a unique design, setting it apart from traditional combustion engine vehicles and the existing ID. family. Teaser images reveal an upright, crossover/SUV-like profile. The vehicle will share the MEB platform with the ID.2all, though the ID.2all will be slightly more compact and will feature a longer wheelbase compared to the international Volkswagen Polo.

While specific details of the powertrain are not yet available, the new EV is expected to include a front-wheel-drive motor setup, paired with a large battery pack that will offer an estimated range of 350-450 km. Fast DC and AC charging capabilities are also anticipated, providing convenience for users.

Although Volkswagen has launched several electric models globally under the ID. brand, it has not yet introduced an EV in India. Due to current market conditions, it's unlikely these new entry-level EVs will be available in India unless Volkswagen develops a market-specific platform to ensure the vehicle is cost-effective for local consumers.
