Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first unit of Maruti Suzuki's first all-electric car, the e Vitara, from the production line at the Hansalpur factory in Gujarat. The electric SUV made its India debut at the Auto Expo 2025, following its global unveiling in late last year. It will be exclusively manufactured in our market for global exports, marking a significant milestone in the country's 'Make in India' journey. Along with the commencement of e Vitara production, PM Modi also inaugurated a new lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility at the same location. This plant, a joint venture between Suzuki, Toshiba, and Denso, is set to produce hybrid battery electrodes. Its objective is to localise over 80% of the battery’s value, significantly reducing India’s dependence on imports for EV components.
Commenting on the occasion, PM Modi said on his official post on X (formerly Twitter), 'Made in India electric vehicles are now driving onto the global stage. It reflects our nation's growing strength in green mobility.'

He also added, 'Today is a special day in India’s quest for self-reliance and being a hub for green mobility. At the programme in Hansalpur, e Vitara will be flagged off. This Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) is made in India and will be exported to over a hundred nations. In a big boost to our battery ecosystem, production of hybrid battery electrodes will also commence at a plant in Gujarat.'
Exporting the India-made Maruti Suzuki e Vitara to over 100 nations, including Europe and Japan, will have far-reaching benefits for the economy of the country. The most significant advantage will be a rise in foreign exchange earnings. The move will also attract global companies to set up their manufacturing bases in India, and push Indian manufacturers to adhere to stringent global quality standards, safety regulations, and design expectations.

For the uninitiated, the e Vitara is based on the eVX concept, which was first showcased at the Auto Expo 2023. It will use a new skateboard platform developed in partnership with Toyota. The electric SUV offers two battery options: 49kWh and 61kWh (both utilising BYD’s LFP 'Blade' cells). The two variants boast a front-mounted electric motor, providing a peak torque of 192.5Nm.

The 49kWh version generates a maximum power of 143bhp, while the 61kWh variant boosts that to 173bhp. In global markets, a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive option will also be available with 184bhp and 300Nm. Maruti Suzuki has confirmed that its first electric car in India will have a certified range of over 500 kilometres per charge.
