Strengthening its position as the market leader in the electric vehicle segment in India, Tata Motors has successfully sold more than 1 lakh units across the country. The Indian automotive company crossed the 1 lakh electric vehicle sales mark in a span of 5 years. The company claims that it sold about 10,000 units in 44 months, the subsequent 40,000 EVs in 15 months, and the remaining 50,000 products in the last 9 months alone. Tata attributed its sales growth to the Tiago EV, the Tigor EV, and the Nexon EV, with the new Tiago EV becoming the best-seller in the country within a year of its launch in September 2022. More than 19,000 units of the Tiago EV have been delivered to its customers since the company commenced deliveries in January 2023.
Besides, the Tata Nexon EV accounted for more than 50,000 sales since its launch in January 2020. The electric crossover is one of the most popular products in India, with its pricing standing between Rs 14.49 lakh and Rs 17.19 lakh (ex-showroom).
Tata Nexon EV: Battery, Range
The Nexon EV comes in two variants – Prime and Max. The Nexon Prime is powered by a 30.2kWh battery pack, which is claimed to offer an ARAI-certified range of 312km on a full charge. While the Nexon Max gets a 40.5kWh battery with an ARAI-certified range of 453km.
The growing popularity and huge demand for the electric offering can be attributed to the industry-wide GST reduction to 5 per cent on EVs, as opposed to 28 per cent on ICE-powered vehicles.
Tata Tiago, Tigor EV: Battery, Range & More
The introduction of the updated Tigor EV in 2021 and the Tiago EV in 2022 further helped Tata boost its sales growth. The Tiago EV – the most affordable electric car in the company's EV line-up – is priced between Rs 8.69 lakh and Rs 12.04 lakh. Prices are ex-showroom. The Tiago EV managed to cross the 10,000 units sales mark in just under 4 months, whereas the Tigor EV has secured its place as the only compact sedan EV in the Indian market.
There are two battery packs available for the Tiago EV: a 19.2kWh and a 24kWh. A smaller battery produces 60bhp of maximum power and 110Nm of peak torque, while a larger battery produces 73bhp and 114Nm. The entry-level model has a 250-kilometre MIDC range. The top-spec model, on the other hand, is said to have a 315-kilometre MIDC range.
The Tigor EV's electric motor is capable of generating 73bhp and 170Nm. According to the firm, the battery pack in the Tigor EV has an IP67 grade for protection from water and dust. The car can go from 0 to 60km/h in 5.7 seconds. On a single charge, the model claims a driving range of 315 kilometre. In our market, the price of this EV begins at Rs 12.49 lakh (ex-showroom).
Along with the Tigor, the Tiago, and the Nexon electric cars, Tata Motors also retails the Xpres-T, which is based on the Tigor EV and repurposed for fleet buyers.
