With a strong commitment to green transport, the Uttarakhand Government has installed 25 electric vehicle charging stations along the Char Dham Yatra route. The initiative not only promotes greener travel options for pilgrims but also contributes to the broader push for sustainable mobility in India. With each charging station offering a 60 kW output, the infrastructure is equipped to handle the demands of EVs along the challenging Char Dham route. The network is said to grow to 38 stations—28 operated by the Uttarakhand Transport Department and 10 by THDC (Tehri Hydro Development Corporation Limited). This planned expansion is a step toward making the pilgrimage more eco-conscious. By combining modern EV infrastructure with one of India’s oldest pilgrimages, Uttarakhand is leading the way in promoting clean, efficient transportation at popular spiritual sites.
The newly installed EV charging stations along the Char Dham Yatra route are designed to be universally compatible, with each station offering a total capacity of 60 kW, split into two 30 kW charging guns. A majority of these charging stations have been strategically installed on Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) properties.

The Char Dham Yatra is a spiritual journey in Uttarakhand, India, that involves visiting four sacred shrines: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. For devotees, this sacred journey is believed to cleanse the soul and help achieve Moksha, or spiritual liberation. Each of the four shrines holds deep religious meaning. Yamunotri and Gangotri mark the revered sources of the Yamuna and Ganges rivers, respectively. Kedarnath is dedicated to Lord Shiva, while Badrinath honours Lord Vishnu. Running from May to November, the Yatra draws millions of pilgrims annually, who seek both spiritual enlightenment and the breathtaking beauty of the Himalayan landscape. It's truly one of India's most important and treasured religious journeys.
