autoX Awards 2023: No motorcycle in the market is a bigger head-scratcher than the Ducati Diavel V4. Is it a cruiser-style sports bike or is it a sporty cruiser? No one knows and, no one cares. When a motorcycle looks as stunning as it does and delivers earth-shattering power, nothing else matters. While the first-generation Diavel had some rough edges, the new Diavel definitely has improved upon them and matured. It looks sharper, weighs lighter, gets more creature comforts, and is a lot better to ride.

The new Ducati Diavel has replaced the previous-gen’s V-Twin motor with a modified version of the Panigale’s V4. Called the GranTurismo, it first appeared in the Multistrada before it made its way to the Diavel V4. The engine is not just lighter than the 1260cc twin-cylinder unit but also more compact. The engine makes 170bhp and a healthy 125Nm of torque. The Diavel’s instantaneous and strong torque delivery makes it an absolute delight to ride on the race track. Yes, there were faster, lighter, and more nimble motorcycles available during the test, but the Ducati Diavel V4 held its ground rather impressively. It managed to impress all of us with its thrilling performance. Despite its focus on long-range touring and longevity, this engine makes every single ride feel exciting and fun. The new bike is not just more powerful but also lighter than its predecessor, thanks in part to the new aluminium frame that replaces the previous steel-trellis configuration.

The new Diavel V4 tips the scale at 236kgs, making it almost 12kgs lighter than the V2 version. The weight reduction was quite apparent during our high-speed trials on the banked parabola of the ICAT test track – which required hard acceleration, crossing the 200km/h mark, before braking to hit the corner that is also extremely bumpy. Through all of this, the Diavel felt light and remained composed, even setting the fourth fastest time during our trials.
